Key Takeaways

Adjustable beds have been around since the 1800s, when they were first used in Britain. [1]The History of the Hospital Beds and Their Development. Medical Equipment Distribution. July 22, 2019. Found on the internet at https://www.medplushealth.ca/blog/the-history-of-the-hospital-beds-and-their-development. In 1909, physician Willis Gatch invented a three-segment adjustable hospital bed with head and foot elevation to help patients after surgery. Since then, adjustable beds, like GhostBed, have evolved from hospital use straight to our bedrooms, with advanced tech designed to enhance comfort, mobility, and sleep.

Our Reviews Team surveyed adjustable bed users and found the top benefits of using an adjustable bed included reduced joint and back pain, enhanced comfort, and ease of getting out of bed, while adjustable lumbar support was ranked as the most important feature. [2]NCOA Adviser Adjustable Bed Survey. 1,000 respondents. Conducted using Pollfish. Launched June 2023. Heidi Huynh, an occupational therapist and owner of Ascend Therapy Services, noted everyone has different needs, so an adjustable bed can provide different benefits from person to person.

“Features such as head and foot elevation can have health benefits for someone with specific needs,” she said. “For example, I spoke of changing positioning for weight distribution, which can decrease the risk of pressure sores or skin breakdown. Elevation can also help with swelling and edema, keeping the legs elevated above the heart with bed positioning.”

If you’re looking for a bed that can provide easier mobility getting in and out, as well as rest without as many aches and pains, you might want to consider an adjustable bed.

Designated “Best for Couples” in our Reviews Team’s lineup of the best adjustable beds due to its split king adjustable bed with dual remote operation, the GhostBed Adjustable Power Base comes with a variety of features—including custom elevation options to operate the head and feet of the bed separately, so you can personalize the positioning for comfort. Six preset positions are available, including TV, zero gravity, and lounge. Independent head and foot massage offers 15 modes, which can help ease aches, although research shows relief varies from person to person. [3]Miake-Lye, Isomi M., et al. The base also features under-bed LED lights, which provide a soft glow and can help prevent stumbles at night. Four USB ports are available to charge your favorite devices, making it easier to keep everything within arms’ reach. Additionally, a built-in retainer bar at the foot of the bed and textured fabric are designed to help keep mattresses in place throughout the various bed positions.

The recommended height for beds is 20–23 inches from floor to top of the mattress. [4]Beds in Accessible Guest Rooms and Sleeping Rooms. Disability Rights and Education Defense Fund. Three-piece legs allow you to customize the base height from 4–12 inches (the average mattress measures 10–12 inches high). Choosing the right height for the legs allows you to achieve an accessible bed height, which may help reduce the risk of injury from a fall. [5]Quigley, Patricia. What customers have to say about GhostBed

“The Ghost Bed twin XL is truly the best bed I’ve ever seen and slept on in my entire life. I do not envision ever needing a new bed, maybe a new mattress for it down the road but it is truly spectacular. I cannot think of anyway to make it better! Thank you!”

MICKEY T. GOODRIDGE, VERIFIED CUSTOMER (AMAZON)

“I bought just the frame because I had a new mattress. This adjustable bed frame has been a miracle for me. I could only sleep about 3 hours a night in bed because of my back problems. Since I got my Ghost Bed I have spent every night in bed and wake up with no back pain.”

SHEILA B. VERIFIED CUSTOMER (AMAZON)

“I ordered from Ghost Bed but after speaking with my husband, I decided to wait. I called within a few hours of ordering only to be told that the bed was already packed for shipment and they could not cancel it. The rep then reassured me that I could refuse the delivery with no penalty or restock fee. I was returned most of the money minus $300.00 restocking fee. I contacted the company and was told that I was informed of this and that they could not refund it. I spoke with a supervisor and was also told the same thing. If this was the case they should have told me. They did not and are claiming that they did. I will never order from Ghost Bed again and I hope no one else falls into their trap.”

—ALLYSON P., VERIFIED CUSTOMER (BBB)

“We purchased a new adjustable bed but the legs were too tall. My husband found GhostBed and they advertised 6 inch universal legs for adjustable beds. He ordered a set of six for $65.00. They arrived a few days later but the leg screws were much smaller than the ones on our bed. When he contacted the company, he was told that legs were not refundable if the box had been opened and the legs used. The legs were not used, but how could he check the size if he could not open the box. The company also said if THEY decided the box had not been opened they would deduct the returned postage and a restocking fee. We have chalked this up as a loss! I normally read the reviews on companies with names like ‘GhostBed’ but my husband made this purchase while I was at work. I think he has learned his lesson. Always check these kinds of companies out before you order anything!”

How we research and evaluate adjustable beds

Our Reviews Team extensively scrutinizes adjustable beds to make sure we only recommend those we believe will make a difference to our readers. Together, we’ve researched prominent brands by mystery shopping adjustable beds, understanding the experiences of real customers, and consulting with independent sleep experts to better understand why people seek out adjustable beds. Our method includes testing adjustable beds for ourselves, considering comfort, price, delivery, warranty, brand reputation, and more to gauge whether the adjustable bed is appropriate for NCOA readers’ needs.

Bottom line

The GhostBed Adjustable Base is designed and engineered in the United States. The brand currently offers one style of adjustable bed, which comes with similar options found on other adjustable beds, such as zero-gravity positioning, USB ports, and under-bed lighting. GhostBed as a brand has mixed reviews across third-party sites, with low scores on BBB and Trustpilot and a higher score on Amazon. If you’re looking for a bed with an average price and plenty of features, the GhostBed adjustable base might be the right choice for you. Just remember that unless you pay for white-glove delivery, you’ll have to assemble the bed yourself, so make sure to plan ahead.
