Best recliners for seniors in 2024

What we look for in recliners for older adults

We found several important factors when reviewing recliners for older adults, including:

Battery life

All recliners in this review need to be plugged in to charge. But a backup battery is essential, especially in the case of a power outage. We look at what backup help each chair provides.

Comfort add-ons

You expect a recliner to allow you to lean back in comfort, but you may also be looking for more. Options for heated areas, massages, and additional lumbar (lower-back) support can make the extra cost worthwhile.

Control options

Recliners should give you options to customize the chair to your comfort. We looked for recliners that offered options for controlling things like headrest height and reclining angle.

Lift and tilt functions

Recliners can lift or tilt to make it easier for you to get into or out of the chair. This can be helpful for older adults or anybody with mobility issues. Every recliner in this roundup can either tilt or lift (and one does both).

Our expert take on the Golden Technologies Comforter with MaxiComfort Zero Gravity Lift Chair PR-535

The Golden Technologies Comforter with MaxiComfort Zero Gravity Lift Chair impressed testers with its various options, ease of control, and low price. When testing, our Reviews Team noticed that the chair is designed so there are no seams on the load-bearing areas of your back. This helps make room for a large piece of supportive foam near your lower back, which helps ease back pressure.

“Two features that older adults should look for when looking for recliners include a supportive backrest and power. Older adults are going to often need some extra support for their lower back,” explained Matthew Cavanaugh, DC, chiropractor at Cavanaugh Chiropractic in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The MaxiComfort has a hand control that lets you program your preferred settings for reclining. You can even raise your feet above your heart when reclining, and the ultra-padded armrests help relieve pressure from your shoulders and back. The MaxiComfort is also the only recliner on this list offering both lift and tilt options for exiting the chair. That means the chair will either tilt forward or lift upward to help you get out of the chair—whatever’s easiest for you.

One of the biggest standouts of this lift chair are the different size options. For a smaller person, a chair that’s too large keeps you from using the armrests and footrest to relax, without feeling like you’re sinking or uncomfortably positioning yourself and hurting your back. This chair comes in six sizes, from petite to large/wide. We haven’t seen any other recliner offer this many size options.

This Golden Technologies chair also has the option for heat and massage features, but those items are an upgrade. Prices for the upgrade will vary by retailer.

The PR-535’s lower price, combined with its high weight limit and its ability to both lift and tilt, makes this recliner a great overall choice.

Our expert take on the Osaki Sonno XT-2 GravZero Leather Recliner with Lumbar Heat and Air Massage

This premium recliner exudes luxury. According to our testers, the genuine leather material has a soft, plush feel. It comes with lower-back heating, the option for a full spinal air massage, and the ability to operate it all from a programmable remote control. It also uses memory foam throughout for a soft yet supportive feel. Though these options are available in some other chairs on this list as extra-cost upgrades, it’s nice to have it all in one package.

Our testers especially liked the Osaki recliner’s movable headrest. They said it was easy to customize to their comfort and it also helped support their neck when lying back. The base of the chair is a luxurious wood, which you can choose to have finished in a black or brown color.

The chair contains NASA-inspired technology that helps keep your posture aligned, and comes with the safety feature of overheating power surge sensors.

The Osaki Sonno XT-2 is the most-expensive recliner on this list by more than $2,000. But with the higher price comes more luxurious materials (like leather, wood, and memory foam) and extra comfort features come standard (like massage and heat).

It’s a top-of-the-line product, with a top-of-the-line price to match.

Our expert take on the Golden Technologies 29″ Extra Wide MaxiComforter Power Lift Recliner

A narrow chair with smaller arms can be confining for a larger-sized person. Golden Technologies addresses this issue by offering the Golden Technologies 29″ Extra Wide MaxiComforter Power Lift Recliner in Large/Wide. This recliner can hold up to 600 pounds, and the oversized seat spans 29 inches. The chair has padded armrests for extra comfort, along with a hand control that lets you program your preferred settings.

This is the largest recliner on this list, with the highest weight capacity by 100 pounds (the Golden Technologies Comforter with MaxiComfort Zero Gravity Lift Chair can hold 500). The Golden Technologies Extra-Wide can hold more than double the capacity of the Osaki Sonno XT-2 yet costs about half as much.

The Golden Technologies Extra-Wide chair has the option for heat and massage features, but those items are an upgrade (prices vary by retailer). For higher-weight users who can have challenges finding a recliner that fits their height and weight, this one could be a good choice.

How we test the best recliners for seniors

Our Reviews Team has dedicated more than 200 hours to evaluating mobility products like recliners for older adults. We consulted at least six health care professionals and researched roughly 25 brands. We’ve also surveyed 1,400 recent buyers to understand their experiences shopping for mobility aids.

We evaluated the best recliners for older adults based on luxury features, programming options, the support the recliner offers, and other aspects many shoppers consider, according to our survey results. We also considered comfort, and the all-important price tag of various models.

What to consider when shopping for a recliner

A recliner is more than just a chair. Many people spend significant time in their recliner, whether it’s watching TV or catching a nap. Consider the following features as you begin your search.

Recliner material

Type of recliner

Some recliners operate with the push of a button, while others require manual adjustments. Consider what’s most important for your comfort. Some recliners offer massaging and heating features. Manual chairs are less expensive but often lack the bells and whistles of power chairs.

Recliner size and space compatibility

Finding the right recliner means it has to fit in your designated space. Keep in mind if you deal with mobility issues, a recliner that crowds the room will leave little space for you to move around.

Price

Recliner prices can range from hundreds of dollars to several thousands. Lower-priced models will have basic features. Extras like heated seating, a massaging function, and power lower-back support will add to the bottom line.

Additional features

If you have a lot of aches and pains, heat and a vibrating massage feature can reinvigorate sore muscles. If you’re sitting against the upholstery for hours, a soft, cushioned feel might be a must. For others, a fabric that’s less expensive is the way to go. The key is knowing what you want, and how much you’re willing to pay for it.

Recliner cost

Less expensive recliner models can be hundreds of dollars, while those equipped with luxury features can run into the thousands. When you shop for a recliner, consider what features are important to you. Keep in mind you may not have to shoulder the financial burden alone.

“Some insurances may help cover the costs of a lift chair. It is an option worth exploring. Ask your health care provider to write a letter outlining your current diagnosis and how a lift chair is medically necessary. This assistance can go a long way in helping older adults maintain their mobility and keep their independence,” said Cavanaugh, the doctor of chiropractic in Louisiana.

Are recliners for older adults covered by Medicare or Medicaid?

Both Medicare and Medicaid may potentially cover your recliner purchase, but there are details you need to be aware of.

If you live in a nursing home or Medicare has already covered a mobility device like a wheelchair lift or stair lift for you, it may not cover a recliner purchase. You may be able to get your recliner through Medicare Part B medical insurance or Medicare Advantage. Your doctor must say the recliner is medically necessary for you. You’ll also need to purchase your recliner from a supplier who accepts Medicare.

Some states do offer Medicaid coverage; check with your local Medicaid office for further details.

For more money, the Osaki Sonno XT-2 GravZero Leather Recliner with Lumbar Heat and Air Massage could be a splurge well worth making.

Frequently asked questions

“Lift recliners can be good for older adults that need some extra help getting out of the chair,” said Jeremy Smith, MD, board certified orthopedic surgeon with Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. “As we get older, we will need more support.”

While incredibly beneficial, recliners can take up a lot of space, use constant electrical power, and often come with a hefty price tag.

“A lift chair is going to assist someone standing up out of a chair, while a recliner is going to focus more on the act of laying back and taking tension off of the body,” Dr. Smith, the California surgeon, explained.
