Shopping for a mattress with your partner may not be as exciting as a date night, but finding the right mattress for restorative, quality sleep can be just as important for your relationship. Poor sleep can negatively affect your mood and stress levels, making it difficult to show up as your best self [1] Triantafillou S., et al. Relationship Between Sleep Quality and Mood: Ecological Momentary Assessment Study. JMIR Mental Health. Oct. 26, 2018 . One study found evidence that sleep quality can influence couples’ interpersonal interactions the following day [2] Cernadas Curotto P., et al. Quarreling After a Sleepless Night: Preliminary Evidence of the Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Interpersonal Conflict. Affective Science. Dec. 7, 2021

If your current mattress keeps you and your partner tossing and turning at night or causes you to wake up due to back pain, it’s probably time for a new one. But shopping for a mattress with your partner is challenging since you’ll likely experience the same mattress differently. A mattress feels unique for every sleeper, depending on weight, sleeping position, and preferences.

With this in mind, our Reviews Team selected the best mattresses for couples based on various needs and preferences. We’ve focused on features like motion isolation The ability of a mattress to keep movement on one side of the bed from affecting the other side. , edge support This refers to the bed’s stability along the edges. , cooling technology, responsiveness Responsiveness describes how much surface bounce a mattress has and how it responds to pressure or the sleeper’s movements, making it easier to move around and change sleeping positions. , support, and comfort to help narrow down your choices.

Additional information

Our expert take

The Helix Twilight is a hybrid mattress with layers of soft memory foam and firm responsive foam on top of pocketed spring coils. The responsive foam and coils give this mattress a firmer surface than other hybrids. The Helix Twilight is an excellent choice for couples looking for a mattress with more firm support and bounce than soft sinkage.

Our testers felt more “on top” of the mattress than “in” it, and they were most comfortable when lying on their backs. We think the Helix Twilight should support back sleepers of all weights, but some lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) sleepers may find the mattress too firm.

While we recommend the mattress for back sleepers, we think it may be too firm for side sleepers, who tend to need a softer mattress that cushions their pressure points. Our testers’ shoulders and hips didn’t sink into the mattress enough, causing pressure to build up in those areas. Firmness feels differently for each sleeper and will depend on your weight, height, and personal preferences.

Motion isolation and edge support: We were impressed with how well this hybrid mattress absorbed and isolated movement between both sides, especially since the surface is bouncy and firm. This is an excellent combination for couples—you won’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night, but you’ll benefit from a responsive surface that supports your movement.

The Helix Twilight has a strong, supportive edge. Good edge support is critical when sharing a bed since it allows you to use the entire mattress surface. Our testers felt just as secure lying near the edge of the mattress as they did in the center—they never felt like they were sinking or falling off the edge.

Pros Adjust firmness in real time Organic cotton cover Free white-glove delivery and setup One-year trial period Cons High price May deflate during the night More technical than traditional mattress
Additional information

Our expert take

The Saatva Solaire is the most unique mattress in this review. It has air chambers that inflate and deflate to adjust the mattress’s firmness in real time. The Solaire has 50 firmness settings to choose from, with “0” being the softest and “50” being the firmest, which you adjust with the included remote control. Separate air chambers are available on each side for queen- and king-size mattresses, allowing couples to choose individual firmness settings for their side of the bed. We recommend the Saatva Solaire for couples who can’t agree on a mattress due to drastically different body types or preferences.

With so many firmness options, it’s difficult for our Reviews Team to review the Saatva Solaire like we would a standard mattress. We focused on two of the firmness options—setting 20 and setting 40—when testing the mattress. Our tester felt comfortable lying on their back and side with both of these settings. They didn’t feel any pressure buildup in their shoulder or hip when lying on their side. The plush cover and memory foam layer offered nice cushioning support, while the Talalay latex A natural rubber material that offers breathability and temperature regulation layer stopped our tester from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

We like that you can switch the order of the memory foam and Talalay latex layers. The Saatva Solaire mattress cover unzips, allowing you to easily remove and swap the two layers. If you’d like a more responsive, bouncy surface instead of sinking memory foam, we recommend putting the Talalay latex layer above the memory foam layer.

Setting 20 may be too soft for stomach sleeping. Our tester felt their hips sinking into the mattress and out of alignment with their spine. Stomach sleepers need a firm surface that supports their hips and keeps their spine in neutral alignment The spine’s natural curves at the neck, middle, and lower (lumbar) sections. . We recommend using settings 40–50 if you’re a stomach sleeper.

Motion isolation and edge support: The mattress’s plush cover and memory foam absorbed movement well during our tests. It has good motion isolation; you shouldn’t feel your partner’s movement even if you both have different firmness settings.

Our testers were also pleased with the mattress’s edge support. The Saatva Solaire has high-density foam lining the mattress edge, giving it a secure, stable edge that doesn’t sink when you sit on it or lie near it.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Most sleepers, since firmness can be adjusted
  • Couples who don’t want to wake their partner when changing positions at night
  • Couples who can’t agree on a firmness level

  • People looking for a more affordable mattress

Pros and cons of The WinkBed mattress
Pros Multiple firmness options Contains cooling materials Excellent motion isolation Responsive surface Cons White-glove delivery (free shipping and setup of new mattress and free removal of old mattress) not available
Additional information

Our expert take

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress designed to help keep sleepers cool. The mattress cover contains TENCEL, a breathable material shown to absorb moisture, according to a clinical trial. Beneath the cover is a pillow top containing gel foam. Hybrid mattresses also run cooler than memory foam mattresses since air can flow between the spring coils. The WinkBed is available in four firmness options; we tested the luxury-firm, a true medium mattress. The WinkBed luxury-firm is a good middle-ground mattress with cooling materials designed to help couples stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Our Reviews Team was impressed that the mattress surface stayed cool throughout testing, even with multiple testers on the mattress to mimic a couple or family. With The WinkBed, most sleepers will feel more “on” the surface than enveloped “in” it, but testers still reported a gentle cradled feel. If you and your partner are lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) or average-weight (130–250 pounds) back or side sleepers, we think The WinkBed should contour your body and relieve pressure in both these positions.

The mattress’s supportive bounce helps you change positions while you sleep, and testers never felt stuck in the plush pillow top. We also think this makes The WinkBed luxury-firm a good mattress for sex.

Use The WinkBed firmness guide to help choose the right mattress firmness option for you and your partner. You can exchange your mattress for a different firmness option for $49 if you don’t like your first pick.

Motion isolation and edge support: To test the mattress’s motion isolation, we placed a glass of water on one side while a tester moved on and off the mattress on the other side. The glass barely moved during these tests, showing how well the mattress absorbs movement. The WinkBed luxury-firm offers an excellent combination for couples—you won’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night, but you’ll benefit from a responsive surface that supports your movement.

Sleepers who like to spread out on their mattress may not feel as stable when sleeping near the edge. Our tester felt like they would roll off the bed if they were close to the edge. The edge felt more secure when sitting or standing up from the bed.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Hot sleepers who need high-performance cooling materials
  • Any type of sleeper—choose plush-soft, luxury-firm, or firm comfort levels to accommodate your preferences
  • Partners with different sleep preferences looking for a middle ground with decent motion isolation

Who may want to avoid it

  • Higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) stomach sleepers may not get enough support with the luxury-firm option
  • Lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) sleepers may want a softer option than the luxury-firm

Pros and cons of the Nolah mattress
Pros Patented foam material designed for side sleepers White-glove delivery available ($150–$300) Can experience the mattress in person at a showroom Cons Not recommended for stomach sleepers May not accommodate higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) side sleepers
Additional information

Our expert take

The Nolah Signature 12″ is a thoughtfully designed all-foam mattress. It contains layers of AirFoam, a type of foam exclusive to Nolah, designed for side sleeping, pressure relief, and a cooler feel than traditional memory foam mattresses. We recommend the Nolah Signature for couples interested in a supportive foam mattress without deep sinkage.

Our testers found the Nolah Signature firmer than other foam mattresses they’ve tested, but not so firm that it was uncomfortable. The supportive mattress has a cushioned, comfortable feel, but the firmer foam prevented testers from sagging into the mattress or feeling “stuck.” We think this indicates a more durable foam mattress, especially if you’re sharing the mattress with a partner.

The mattress contoured to our testers’ lower shoulders, knees, and hips when they lay on their sides. If you or your partner are primarily side sleepers, we believe the Nolah Signature should offer nice pressure relief and cushioning comfort in this position. But don’t worry—you’re not limited to one position on this mattress. Our testers felt supported when lying on their backs, too.

Motion isolation and edge support: The mattress has great motion isolation. One tester couldn’t feel their testing partner change positions on the other side of the mattress. As expected, the foam layers absorbed motion nicely, but we were pleasantly surprised by the mattress’s slight bounce. You and your partner should be able to use the slight bounce to move around and change positions without feeling stuck.

The edge was as firm and supportive as the rest of the mattress. Testers felt stable lying near and sitting on the mattress edge.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Side sleepers may enjoy the supportive, cradled feel that helps relieve pressure
  • Couples who don’t want to wake their partner when switching sides at night
  • Shoppers who need white-glove delivery to carry the mattress into the bedroom

Who may want to avoid it

  • Stomach sleepers likely need a firmer mattress to support their hips and spine
  • Higher-weight sleepers may feel too much sinkage in this mattress

Pros and cons of the Titan mattress
Pros Can support up to 1,000 pounds Cooling cover available Excellent edge support Cons May be too firm for some sleepers May not support higher-weight stomach sleepers
Additional information

Our expert take

The Titan Plus Luxe is a hybrid mattress designed for higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) sleepers. The mattress’s firmness feels different depending on your weight, but is designed to feel medium-firm for most higher-weight sleepers. The mattress will feel firmer for sleepers who are lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) and average-weight (130–250 pounds).

A lighter-weight and higher-weight sleeper both tested the Titan Plus Luxe to get different perspectives. While we recommend the Titan Plus Luxe for higher-weight sleepers, we think this mattress can still accommodate both sleepers, even if only one is higher-weight.

Our testers immediately noticed how comfortable the mattress cover was. The cover is quilted with gel memory foam, making it cool and soft to the touch. Both testers liked how easy it was to move on the mattress—it has a nice bounce that supported their movements when changing positions. Our higher-weight tester felt comfortable and supported on their back and side, but they felt some pressure buildup when lying on their stomach.

Our lighter-weight tester felt comfortable lying on their back and stomach, but the mattress was too firm for side-sleeping. While a mattress will feel different for every sleeper, we think some lighter-weight and average-weight sleepers may feel supported and comfortable on this mattress.

Motion isolation and edge support: We were impressed with how well the mattress isolated motion, especially since it has a firmer and more responsive surface. The mattress has a strong, durable edge that allows sleepers to use the very edge of the bed. Our testers felt stable when lying near the edge and sitting on it.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) back and side sleepers
  • People who need excellent edge support for sleeping near the edge or safely getting in and out of bed
  • Couples who don’t want to wake their partner when changing positions

Who may want to avoid it

  • People looking for a softer mattress
  • Higher-weight stomach sleepers
  • Lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) and average-weight (130–250 pounds) side sleepers

Pros and cons of the Brooklyn Bedding mattress
Pros Great for side sleepers Soft surface may help relieve shoulder pain Cover contains cooling materials Cons May be too soft for stomach sleepers May not support higher-weight sleepers
Additional information

Our expert take

The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite is a hybrid mattress with a soft, cushioning feel. It’s softer than other hybrid mattresses we’ve tested, but due to the pocketed spring coils, it still has a good balance between soft and firm. The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite has two layers of slow-moving foam that give it a softer, more cushioned surface that’s excellent for side sleepers.

Testers felt their shoulders and hips sink nicely into the surface when lying on their sides. The soft surface contours nicely to the shoulders and hips, making this a great mattress for lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) and average-weight (130–250 pounds) side sleepers. Even though the mattress surface was softer, our testers could easily move around and change positions without feeling too stuck or sunken. We think this is a great combination if you and your partner want a mattress with a deeper hug without the annoying side effect of potentially getting “stuck” in the material.

We think the mattress is too soft to properly support higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) sleepers or those who sleep primarily on their stomachs.

Motion isolation and edge support: Not surprisingly, this softer mattress had excellent motion isolation, meaning couples shouldn’t be disturbed by their partner’s movements. The edge support wasn’t the best—the softer surface collapsed significantly when our testers sat on the mattress edge. One tester reported feeling unstable when lying near the edge, giving couples less room to spread out on the mattress.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • People looking for a softer mattress
  • Lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) and average-weight (130–250 pounds) side sleepers
  • Couples who don’t want to wake their partner when changing positions

Who may want to avoid it

  • Stomach sleepers, who need a firmer surface to prevent their hips from sagging into the mattress and swaying their lower back, which can feel uncomfortable
  • Higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) sleepers

Pros and cons of the Birch Luxe Natural mattress
Pros Made from natural materials Zoned lumbar support 25-year warranty Optional setup and removal services available Cons May be too firm for side sleepers High price
Additional information

Our expert take

The Birch Luxe Natural is an eco-friendly mattress made of organic, natural materials. The hybrid mattress has a soft cover containing organic cotton, wool, and cashmere, creating a plush, breathable surface. We like that a natural latex layer sits on top of the pocketed coils since latex is more responsive and breathable than traditional memory foam. If you and your partner are eco-conscious and prefer a firmer mattress, we recommend the Birch Luxe Natural.

Our testers rated the Birch Luxe Natural as a firm mattress after trying out various sleeping positions. The mattress cover adds a more cushioned and plush feel, but testers felt more “on” than “in” the mattress and didn’t feel as much contouring compared to other mattresses. We like that the mattress has firmer coils in the center, which is designed to support the lumbar area. Our testers felt the extra support when lying on their back and recommend this mattress for people who sleep primarily on their back, or those living with back pain.

While the Birch Luxe Natural is too firm for most side sleepers, we think stomach sleepers will feel comfortable on this mattress. When lying on their stomach, our tester’s hips were supported and didn’t sink into the surface.

Motion isolation and edge support: The mattress has an excellent combination of a bouncy, responsive surface, yet good motion isolation. We were pleased with our results during testing. Unfortunately, the edge support didn’t perform as well. Our testers felt like they would fall off when sleeping close to the edge, which we found surprising for a firm mattress.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • People searching for natural materials in their mattress
  • Sleepers with lower back pain who benefit from extra support in the lumbar area
  • Stomach sleepers who need a firmer surface to prevent their hips from sagging into the mattress and swaying their lower back, which can feel uncomfortable

Who may want to avoid it

  • People looking for a softer mattress
  • Higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) sleepers

Bottom line

You and your partner will likely experience the same mattress differently. Finding the right mattress for you and your sleeping partner requires discussing non-negotiable features, personal preferences like feel and firmness, and your budget.

We chose Helix Twilight as the best overall mattress for couples because of its supportive yet contouring feel, excellent motion isolation, and reasonable prices. Remember, what’s best for our Reviews Team and testers may not be best for you, so consider our other top mattresses for couples: Saatva Solaire, The WinkBed, Nolah Signature 12″, Titan Plus Luxe, Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite, or the Birch Luxe Natural.

Once you and your partner have decided on a new mattress, we recommend using it for at least one month before deciding to keep or return it. This gives your body time to adjust to the new mattress. Fortunately, our top mattress picks offer at least a 100-night trial.

Frequently asked questions

We chose the Helix Twilight as the best overall mattress for couples. The right mattress depends on your weight, sleeping positions, personal preferences, and budget. The best mattress for you and your partner should isolate movement, have a strong edge and a supportive surface, and stay cool.

If you and your partner have drastically different weights, consider the Saatva Solaire. The mattress has 50 firmness options, which are controlled by inflating and deflating the bed’s air chambers using the included remote control. Try a split king mattress if you prefer a more traditional hybrid or memory foam mattress. A split king is a king-size mattress made of two twin XL mattresses, which allows you and your partner to choose the firmness and feel for each side.

We recommend a medium-firm mattress for couples with slightly different weights who can’t decide on their ideal firmness level.

Memory foam mattresses can be a good option for couples since the material absorbs movement. Good motion isolation means sleepers won’t be disturbed when their partner switches positions or gets in and out of bed. Some of the drawbacks with memory foam mattresses are that they trap body heat, making the bed uncomfortably warm for couples. Sleepers may feel too “sunken in” or have trouble moving and changing positions on the soft surface.

We recommend a medium-firm mattress for couples who prefer different sleeping positions. This is a middle-ground firmness level that supports a variety of sleepers. Consider a split king mattress if you and your partner have extremely different sleep preferences. Depending on the brand, you can choose a different firmness for each side. A split king adjustable bed is another option. This allows you and your partner to adjust the mattress height and position on each side, an especially useful feature when one partner has sleep apnea

Queen- and king-size mattresses are common bed sizes for couples, but many brands also offer California king and split king mattresses. The best mattress size for you and your partner depends on your budget, preferences, and bedroom layout.
