As many as 50% of all older adults in the United States deal with sleep problems [1] Tatineny P, et al. Sleep in the Elderly. Missouri Medicine. September-October 2020 . While medication, physical changes, and illnesses can cause sleep disturbances, so can having an uncomfortable mattress. Knowing the right features to focus on when shopping for a mattress can be the difference between tossing and turning all night and getting the rest you need.

“[An older] person should look for great edge support,” said Kelly Wernersbach, owner of Adjust Your Sleep Mattress Boutique in Marlton, New Jersey. “Many [people] sit on the edge of their bed for many reasons, such as [to] take their medication [or] steady themselves prior to getting up. The mattress also needs the proper amount of upholstery layers, meaning the material on top of the support system needs to be comfortable and forgiving to help relieve pressure and inflammation.”

When shopping for your next mattress, consider your personal preferences, sleeping position, body size and weight, specific health needs, and whether you sleep with a partner.

Our Reviews Team tested and reviewed the hybrid models from DreamCloud, so you can figure out if one of them is right for you.

Offering eight layers of construction for its hybrid mattresses, including two layers of quilted foam and a layer of gel-infused memory foam, we found this mattress offered great overall support. We didn’t completely sink into it, but there was plenty of pressure relief.

Spinal alignment is important for a comfortable sleep experience and for preventing back pain, so we especially like this mattress for back sleepers of all body types [2] Cary D, et al. Identifying Relationships Between Sleep Posture and Non-Specific Spinal Symptoms in Adults: A Scoping Review. BMJ Open. June 28, 2019 . The DreamCloud Hybrid mattress also contains a layer of individually wrapped steel coils that provide extra edge support This refers to the bed’s stability along the edges. . While our Reviews Team was initially concerned about the lack of edge support when they sat on the bed’s edge, testers noted that the support improved when they were lying down.

Our expert take

Our Reviews Team liked the support this mattress provided, especially in the lumbar area, where it offered just the right amount of sinkage to fill in any gaps and ease tension. This is one reason we rated it high for pressure relief.

We also liked this mattress’s edge support, which can make the bed feel bigger for couples who want to maximize their space. While lying on the mattress near the edge, we felt well-supported. This is also great for people who need a stronger perimeter when sitting or leaning on the edge of the bed.

The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is considered a luxury mattress, and with a cashmere cover and Euro pillow-top A style of pillow top that provides an added layer of plush. The extra layer of padding is stitched beneath the mattress cover, so it’s flush with the edges of the mattress without adding extra height. , it has a plush feel while offering good bounce. Our testers gave this mattress 4.5 out of 5 for responsiveness, making this a good option for combination sleepers. This is also good for people with reduced mobility who may appreciate the ease of movement a bouncier mattress provides.

Our expert take

Our testers found this mattress’s plush pillow-top soft to the touch, while the steel coil structure provided the support of an innerspring mattress. When lying on our back, our weight was well distributed, and the soft cashmere pillow-top and foam helped keep pressure off the spine. Side sleepers of all body types may benefit from this mattress, with our pressure map A mat with sensors that detects pressure buildup when someone lies across it. test showing good pressure relief while side lying as well.

This mattress offers a highly buoyant, responsive Responsiveness describes how much surface bounce a mattress has and how it responds to pressure or the sleeper’s movements, making it easier to move around and change sleeping positions. surface, which should work for combination sleepers and anyone with reduced mobility. The motion isolation The ability of a mattress to keep movement on one side of the bed from affecting the other side. on this mattress wasn’t as impressive as the other DreamCloud mattresses, though. While smaller movements isolated well, larger movements caused the mattress to shake, which may be a deal-breaker for some couples who are easily awakened.

  • Combination sleepers and people with reduced mobility who like a buoyant mattress
