Key Takeaways

We all know sleep is important, but its impact on our daily and long-term functioning is significant. Getting a good night’s rest [1] Dzierzewski JM and Dautovich ND. Who Cares about Sleep in Older Adults? Clinical Gerontologist. March 1, 2018 helps maintain cognitive functioning, boosts your ability to perform daily activities, can reduce your risk of falls, and lowers your risk of certain diseases, like diabetes and high blood pressure. [2] Harvard Medical School: Division of Sleep Medicine. Why Sleep Matters: Consequences of Sleep Deficiency. Oct. 1, 2021. Updating your bed and bedding may be a good place to start if you’re having trouble sleeping.

One way to get customized comfort is an adjustable bed, which can help people with certain health conditions. “Medical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, sleep apnea, pregnancy, and even congestive heart failure can make it extremely uncomfortable to sleep flat,” said John Gallucci Jr., a doctor of physical therapy and CEO of JAG Physical Therapy. “Elevating the body or legs can offer some sort of support and comfort for individuals, however, each need is different. It’s important to keep in mind that while sleeping in an elevated position can be helpful, it is not the only solution.”

If you’re in the market for an adjustable bed, you’ll want to ensure you have the right mattress for your bed, body type, and sleeping style. Research shows that your mattress can impact your sleep. To help you find the best mattress for you, our Reviews Team put together this list of the best mattresses for an adjustable bed based on cost, quality, firmness, and sleeper type.

Best mattress for adjustable beds in 2024

What we look for in a mattress for adjustable beds

We look for several important factors when testing mattresses for adjustable beds, including:

Compatibility

Outside of choosing the appropriate size, an adjustable bed frame requires a mattress that can move with position changes without damage. Memory foam and latex mattresses are generally a good fit for these beds. If you prefer a hybrid, look for something with individually pocketed innerspring coils, as this will provide the bed with flexibility for adjustments.

Pressure Relief

No matter your reason for selecting an adjustable bed, pressure relief is a factor in mattresses that helps prevent pain or discomfort while you sleep. Pressure relief is provided by beds that do a good job evenly distributing weight, which avoids buildup at common pain points like the shoulders, hips, or lower back.

Firmness

The right firmness level in an adjustable bed allows you to maintain a neutral spine and feels comfortable enough to facilitate uninterrupted sleep. We have found that a medium-firm mattress works well for most sleepers, but body type and preferred sleeping position can change the level of firmness each person needs from their mattress.

Measurements

Adjustable base sizes can vary, so it’s important to look at the actual measurements of your adjustable base before deciding on your mattress, as they may differ slightly in width or length. Additionally, if you choose an adjustable base with certain features, like massage, you’ll want to ensure your mattress’s thickness doesn’t dull your experience.

Our expert take on the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress

We selected the Helix Midnight Luxe as the “Best Mattress for Adjustable Beds Overall” because we think it offers a good balance of sinkage Good contouring sinkage can give sleepers the feeling of being “hugged” by their mattress, but too much sink can result in misalignment of the spine, especially for stomach and back sleepers. and support. It was soft enough that our testers felt like it cradled them, but still felt their bodies were met with support from the second contouring layer of foam.

If combined with an adjustable bed, you can customize your position to get optimal pressure relief and support where needed. This mattress’s flexible core makes it possible to reach that level of customization.

A 10-pound ball sinking into the surface of the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress
The Helix Midnight Luxe has top layers of contouring memory foam that cradle the body. Our testers used a bowling ball to show how the top layer cradles the body.

The mattress features zoned lumbar support, with the middle zone of the mattress offering soft coils beneath the shoulders and hips, while the perimeter and the lumbar zones have reinforced coils for targeted support. The top layers of contouring memory foam are designed to cradle the resting body, while the transition layer of foam and coils are designed to swiftly adapt to pressure changes to make it easier to move around and adjust positions.

Helix mattresses are shipped to your home compressed and rolled in a box. Each mattress takes 30–45 minutes to expand to its full height. Visit this page and select your mattress from the list for instructions on how to unbox and set it up.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress constructed with four layers of memory foam and individually encased steel coils. The mattress has a soft-to-the-touch Tencel A brand of lyocell fiber made from wood pulp that’s known for being soft, breathable, and absorbent. cover, but you can upgrade for additional cooling with the GlacioTex cover. While both materials are designed to provide cooling and moisture-wicking, the mattress with the Tencel cover tested poorly for cooling. So if you sleep hot, we’d recommend upgrading to the GlacioTex cover.

Our expert take on the Nectar Memory Foam mattress

Of all the different options, an all-foam constructed mattress consistently works best with an adjustable bed. This is because an all-foam mattress is significantly more flexible than a mattress with coils, allowing it to more easily conform to the movements of an adjustable bed.

During testing, The Nectar mattress did an exceptional job isolating motion, with our testers giving it a score of five out of five. This is an important quality for those who sleep with a restless partner because you’ll be less likely to feel their movements at night.

Tester sitting on the edge of The Nectar mattress
Memory foam mattresses, like The Nectar, typically offer weaker edge support than hybrid or innerspring mattresses. You can see how the mattress gives in as our tester sits on the edge.

On the other hand, The Nectar also offered minimal bounce during testing, which is common for all-foam mattresses. This might make shifting positions throughout the night or getting out of bed more difficult.

We like that Nectar offers Premium In-Home Setup for an additional $199. When you add this to your cart, your mattress order will be shipped to a local delivery agent, who will come set up your mattress along with any base that you purchase. The agent will also remove your old mattress. If you don’t choose this service, your mattress will arrive by mail in a box.

The Nectar Memory Foam is constructed with three layers of high-quality foam. The top layer is designed to target pressure points, and we found it also offered contour when our testers lay on it. The second and third layers of foam are designed to support the sleeper by keeping their spine aligned and preventing them from sinking too far into the mattress.

“After 20 YEARS of trying to decide whether or not my husband and I should commit to the investment of a king size bed – we finally made the move. I could not be happier. It’s just the right blend of soft and firm.” – Steve F., verified buyer on 09/13/24.

Our expert take on the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress

The increased size of the pocket coils in this hybrid mattress makes it a great option for an adjustable bed. Since the coils have enough space to bend, the mattress should be able to move and conform to the positions you select with an adjustable bed base.

During testing, we noticed that this mattress did a great job keeping the sleeper’s body on top of the bed rather than sinking into it and evenly distributing the sleeper’s weight. This mattress also tested high for pressure relief, and our testers found their spine stayed aligned while lying on their back—all ideal qualities for back sleeping.

A 10-pound ball on the Emma mattress surface
The Emma Hybrid Comfort tends to keep sleepers “on top” of the mattress rather than letting them sink into the materials. Our testers showed this using a weighted ball.

By default, all Emma mattresses are shipped through the mail and arrive in a box. But some shoppers may be in a location where in-home delivery and setup is available. You’ll need to contact a representative to see whether you qualify before placing your order. If you want to have your old mattress removed, you can select that option before checkout for an additional $125.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort has five layers of material to help comfort and support back sleepers. The top two layers of foam are integrated with cooling materials and design elements to help keep your body from getting too hot throughout the night. In addition to the foam material, the Emma Hybrid Comfort also has a layer of ergonomically designed coils to adapt to your body’s contours and help keep the spine aligned.

Our expert take on the The WinkBed mattress

Hybrid mattresses are often a middle-of-the-road option for sleepers who like soft top layers of memory foam but don’t want to sacrifice the support that comes from the coil core of a hybrid mattress. This mattress’s construction helped it score high for full body support (four out of five), edge support (four out of five), and pressure relief (4.5 out of five).

The WinkBed was specifically designed to conform and flex with an adjustable bed’s movements and position settings. The entire structure is durable, so the mattress’s constant movement shouldn’t cause it to become deformed or less comfortable over time.

Our testing found that the luxury-firm style of The WinkBed offered good firmness for back and stomach sleepers, while also offering good pressure relief for side sleepers. But exclusive side sleepers who are lighter weight may want to try the “softer” style of this mattress.

Woman with knee braces sitting on the edge of a bed while another person holds measuring tape against mattress
The top layers of The WinkBed are designed to provide some sinkage for comfort without sacrificing the edge support on the perimeter of the bed. You can see how our tester compresses the edge of the mattress 3.5 inches, but the mattress still keeps the edge strong.

Since all WinkBeds are compressed and shipped through the mail, they will need time to off-gas The chemical odor given off from a new mattress. The smell is harmless and is usually gone within the first few days. before you can sleep on them. Unlike other companies that offer white-glove delivery services, WinkBeds won’t remove your old mattress when delivering your new mattress purchase. But WinkBeds will send an agent to come pick up The WinkBed mattress if you decide to return it or exchange it after the trial period ends.

While we tested the luxury firm version of The WinkBed, it comes in three other firmness levels: softer, firmer, and plus. The quilted pillow top cover is made of Tencel, which we found soft and cool to the touch.

Our expert take on the Titan Plus mattress

The Titan Plus features reinforced coils for durability and support, but the foam layers around the coils help give the mattress some flexibility, making it a good fit for an adjustable bed. Note: the firmer the mattress, the less flex, reducing its compatibility with an adjustable bed.

A 10-pound ball resting on the Titan Plus mattress
The Titan Plus is a firm mattress designed for higher-weight sleepers more than 250 pounds. You can see in the picture above how the weighted ball barely sinks into the mattress.

Since the Titan Plus was made with higher-weight people in mind, we don’t recommend it for lighter-weight sleepers. Some average-weight sleepers may like it for stomach or back sleeping, but we also wouldn’t recommend it to anyone weighing less than 250 pounds for side sleeping. For example, our average-weight tester found that when lying on their back, the mattress didn’t fully mold to align with their spine.

The Titan Plus is shipped free with FedEx Ground Shipping. Your mattress will arrive compressed in a box and need time to expand and off-gas before use. Titan doesn’t offer white-glove delivery or mattress removal at this time.

The Titan Plus is a hybrid mattress with a core made from individually encased, extra-strength coils topped with a contouring foam layer. If you tend to sleep on the warm side, consider upgrading to the GlacioTex Cooling Cover for an extra $100–$200 (the price depends on the size of the mattress you buy).

Our expert take on the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress

Our testers noted that this mattress is firm enough to comfortably support light- and average-size sleepers in any position. During testing, this mattress received perfect scores in pressure relief for all positions. Our testers experienced neutral spinal alignment, noting that while the internal mattress was firm, the top layer provided a lot of cushion and comfort.

When unboxing this mattress, we immediately noticed the cover was made of soft, cool-to-the-touch material. Three material components were used in this mattress to reduce body heat and wick moisture:

  1. Thermoregulatory phase-change material A material that stores or releases heat to maintain a constant temperature. , which is designed to absorb and release body heat
  2. Celliant, which is naturally breathable
  3. Copper-infused memory foam, which is naturally antibacterial and designed to distribute temperature throughout the night
A person sitting on the edge of a Bear mattress.
The tester pictured above doesn’t sink too far into the Bear Elite Hybrid since it’s a firmer-style mattress. But you can see how the edge support remains stable on the perimeter of the mattress.

Since the coils in this hybrid mattress are individually encased, they should conform well with an adjustable bed and offer targeted support while sleeping.

The Bear Elite Hybrid will arrive in a box unless you upgrade to white-glove delivery. Based on our testers’ experience unboxing this mattress, we suggest having at least two people unbox and set it up, since it’s rather heavy and awkward to handle. You’ll also need to give the mattress a couple of days to fully off-gas.

We think the Bear Elite Hybrid feels like a true medium-firm mattress that can work for any sleeping position. It has three layers of memory foam, one layer of encased coils, and a pillow-top cover made from cooling materials to help keep heat and sweat away while you sleep.

Our expert take on the Nolah Evolution mattress

We love that this mattress comes in three different firmness levels—plush, luxury firm, and firm—to help you achieve a custom sleep experience. We specifically tested the luxury firm Nolah Evolution.

The individually encased coils, combined with multiple layers of foam, give this mattress a flexible core, so it should be able to easily conform to the movements of an adjustable bed. The zoned foam and coil design provided support, pressure relief, and responsiveness for all sleeping positions during testing. We found that the Nolah Evolation offered good support in the lower back while providing cushion to pressure points when side sleeping.

10-pound weighted ball sitting near the edge of the mattress
The Nolah Evolution has a soft top layer that helps relieve pressure and provides contouring. You can see how the weighted ball sinks into the material, but the edge support keeps the ball from rolling off.

To measure pressure relief in a mattress, we use a pressure pad that uses colors to show where pressure exists:

The images below show little pressure in the back and side positions, which is why we gave the Nolah Evolution a score of 4.75 out of five. Even high-pressure areas, like the shoulder and hip points, show little pressure when side sleeping.

All Nolah mattresses are delivered in a box through FedEx Ground Shipping. Unboxing is usually a two-person job since the box is quite heavy, so if you think you’ll need an extra hand, Nolah partner Load Up offers white-glove delivery, setup, and mattress removal. Three different service options are available: mattress removal only, mattress set up only, or removal and setup package. This service starts at $125.

The Nolah Evolution is a zoned hybrid mattress with a quilted topper, a venting layer between the topper and the first layer of foam, three foam layers, an encased coil layer, and a plant-based foundation layer. Each layer is assembled to help air vent through the mattress and provide targeted relief and support to sleepers with back pain.

Our tester on the Nolah Evolution mattress:

“My spine is not dipping in the middle at all in a stomach sleeping position on the Nolah Evolution, but sleepers who are heavier might run into this problem. I feel that my spine remains neutral in the prone position and that this mattress could support me in this position throughout the night.”

Customer Reviews

The Nolah Evolution mattress has more than 900 reviews on its website and gets 4.9 stars. Several reviewers mentioned that their back pain disappeared after switching to this mattress, but it doesn’t seem the best option for stomach sleepers.

“This mattress is a major upgrade from our last one. We are both side and back sleepers and used to wake up with back pain — but not anymore.” – Hope, verified buyer on 8/28/24.

“This is totally about me and my back that has been severely knotted up for months, starting just before I got the mattress. So it has taken me a long while of pt to start to enjoy it. I love flopping on it when I get home from work, sturdy sides and edges too. It really is good for side sleepers and I like it. What I don’t like is how heavy it is, making it really hard to change a fitted sheet on my own because you can barely lift the corners.” – Anne, verified buyer on 8/26/24.

Our expert take on the Birch Natural mattress

Latex is a naturally responsive material, which is likely why this mattress scored high (five out of five) in the bounce category. This can be helpful for sleepers who need some assistance when changing positions throughout the night or getting in and out of bed. This mattress’s strong edge support also provides stability if you need to sit on the edge to ease out of bed or to ensure you don’t roll out of bed if you sleep near the edge.

Latex mattresses have an average lifespan of about 20 years, which is double that of every other material used in mattresses. The natural durability and flexibility of Talalay latex make this mattress a great choice for an adjustable bed. It should easily maintain its shape and spring over time.

Birch Natural Mattress next to a white bedside table with gray pillows
The Birch Natural is an eco-friendly mattress with a soft-to-the-touch cover.

While materials like cotton and latex are usually known for their airflow and cooling properties, our testers found that this mattress got warmer as they lay on it. If you tend to be a hot sleeper, you might want to consider cooling sheets to use with this mattress. This mattress also tested high for pressure relief all around and is suitable for multiple sleeper types.

All Birch mattresses are compressed, rolled, boxed, and shipped through FedEx. While you must wait for the mattress to expand after unpackaging, due to its natural composition, there’s no off-gassing period.

In-home setup is available based on geographical eligibility. If it’s available to you, you can choose from three different options: removal only, in-home setup only, or setup and removal, which can include the mattress and any setup (adjustable base, platform, or frame).

The Birch Natural is made from organic and natural materials, including sustainably sourced wool, Talalay latex A natural rubber material that offers breathability and temperature regulation , and cotton. It has individually wrapped coils to reinforce support in high-pressure areas (like hips and shoulder points) and around the edges for additional edge support.

Our expert take on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress

We tested the medium version of this mattress, but it also comes in two other firmness levels: soft and firm. This mattress’s foam and flex base make it a good, affordable mattress option for an adjustable bed. Brooklyn Bedding carries adjustable bases and markets any of its mattresses as compatible options.

Our testers liked this mattress in all sleeping positions, but we particularly liked it for stomach sleeping. Even though it’s on the softer side (six out of 10 in firmness) for a stomach sleeper, our testers said their spines were neutrally aligned when in the stomach position and found it comfortable. Our second favorite position was the back, with testers indicating their weight was evenly distributed and that the mattress provided good contouring. While we found side sleeping comfortable as well, our testers felt light pressure at the shoulders. Overall, we gave this mattress a four out of five for pressure relief. Since this mattress also provides bounce, it’s a good one for combination sleepers.

Weighted ball sitting in the middle of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three different firmness levels. While testing the medium-firm version, the weighted ball was contoured by the top layer but still sat “on top” of the materials.

All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are compressed in a box and shipped through FedEx Ground. At this time, Brooklyn Bedding doesn’t offer white-glove delivery services, mattress setup, or removal.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has five layers of material: a top quilted layer, two layers of foam, one layer of individually encased coils, and a flex base for durability. Its balance of softness and support makes it good for multiple sleeping positions.

“The surface of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is cushiony, but I am met with a slightly firm material underneath. After I push down, it pops up right away to its original shape.”

Customer Reviews

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress gets 4.7 stars on its website with over 10,000 reviews. Many reviewers pointed out that this mattress greatly impacted their sleep quality, especially with its lower price.

“Wonderful mattress. Sleeping really well nowadays. It’s made a huge difference in quality of life.” – John A., verified buyer on 9/18/24.

“This mattress is exceeded all expectations. I did decide to go with the soft, and glad I did. If you like a snuggly squishy bed, the soft is perfect! I was afraid it would be too soft and it’s not. If you’re on the fence here is your sign to go for it!” – Angela R., verified buyer on 9/17/24.

How we test mattresses for adjustable beds

Our Reviews Team has spent over 1,000 hours researching 130 models across 40 different mattress brands. We evaluated each model’s features and material used. We also surveyed more than 3,200 mattress owners about what they are looking for in a mattress while consulting with ten healthcare professionals about what is most important to look for in a mattress for an adjustable bed.

After narrowing down our choices, our team uses a 32-page, standardized testing form to carry out hands-on testing of every model we review. Our team rated each mattress in various categories: pressure relief, support, and bounce. Based on those scores, we rate the mattresses in our scorecard and what makes a good mattress for an adjustable bed.

Firmness and Support

We evaluated each mattress by testing how well it maintains proper spinal alignment in various sleep positions. Our testers measured the mattress’s ability to balance comfort and firmness to prevent pressure buildup, especially on adjustable bed frames, where shifting angles can compromise support. We also considered how individuals with mobility issues could get in and out of the best when it was elevated or reclined.

Pressure Relief

We used pressure mapping systems to determine how well each mattress offloaded pressure on key areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back. By adjusting the bed frame to different angles, we observed how the mattress relieves pressure during these movements. Our testers provided information on the amount of sinkage, focusing on whether the mattress remained comfortable during prolonged use in raised positions.

Motion Isolation

We used a seismograph and had two testers lie side by side, noting any disturbances caused by position changes. Adjustable beds often have unique movement patterns, especially if two people adjust their sides independently. This makes it important to test how well the mattress can absorb movement. We scored each mattress on its ability to reduce disruptions.

Edge Support

We tested how each mattress performed when sat on or slept near the edge. Our testers looked at sinkage and assessed how firm and supportive the mattress stayed, especially when the base was adjusted. For adjustable beds, poor edge support can lead to discomfort or even potential safety risks, so we gave higher marks to mattresses with strong, consistent edge stability.

Cooling and Temperature Regulation

Since adjustable beds often raise or lower body parts, heat can accumulate in specific areas. We evaluated how well mattresses regulated temperature when used on adjustable frames by tracking surface heat over time with a temperature gun. Testers provided feedback on how cool or warm they felt while laying with the mattress in different positions.

To learn more about our testing, review our sleep methodology.

We continuously test new mattresses each month and make sure we give you the most up-to-date information possible. Using the information we collect, we aim to provide our readers with the most accurate and relevant information they need to find the best mattress for their adjustable bed.

Outside of choosing the appropriate size for your frame, an adjustable bed frame requires a mattress that can move with position changes without damage.

Pressure relief is provided by beds that do a good job evenly distributing weight, this avoids build up at common pain points like the shoulders, hips, or lower back.

Who should consider an adjustable bed?

Doctors often prescribe adjustable beds for medical conditions that require a change of sleep position to improve or manage symptoms. This may include managing temporary pain resulting from an unexpected injury or chronic pain that has disrupted sleep in the past. Some medical procedures require patients to sleep at an incline during their recovery, necessitating the temporary use of an adjustable bed.

Adjustable beds are often used by sleepers with significant acid reflux, and individuals with chronic lung conditions such as COPD, emphysema, and asthma may also benefit from use of adjustable beds. Changing sleep position, such as sleeping on an incline, may also improve snoring.

Bottom line

The Helix Midnight Luxe is our top pick for best mattress for adjustable beds because it is designed to be flexible enough for adjustable beds while still maintaining good support in various sleep positions. The queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe is $2,374 before discounts, but it is regularly marked down by as much as 25%. A 10-year warranty protects each new mattress purchased and includes free shipping and a 100-night sleep trial.

When shopping for a mattress to use with an adjustable bed, you’ll want to balance cost, firmness levels, trial periods, warranties, and the type of sleeper you are. What might be a great fit for one sleeper may not work for another. Generally, all-foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are the best choices for an adjustable base. The Helix Midnight Luxe is our top pick, but other mattresses, like the Nectar Memory Foam and the Emma Comfort Hybrid, are also great options for those looking for a mattress that will conform to an adjustable bed’s movements. Our Reviews Team has tested each mattress we feature above, so you can make the best decision for your sleeping needs.

Frequently asked questions

All-foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are the best types of mattresses for an adjustable bed. But you may be able to use an all-innerspring mattress if the company states it’s compatible.

No, you don’t need to get a special mattress for an adjustable bed. Any all-foam, latex, and hybrid mattress should work. If considering an innerspring mattress, check with the manufacturer about whether it’s compatible with an adjustable bed.

Getting a mattress that’s too thin won’t provide adequate support, but going too thick can reduce a mattress’s flexibility. While we recommend using a mattress no more than 14 inches thick with an adjustable bed, mattresses that are 15 inches can be used. Nolah, for example, recommends its 15-inch-thick mattresses with the brand’s adjustable bed. Talk to your adjustable bed brand rep before purchasing a mattress to ensure you don’t buy a mattress that’s too thick.

Adjustable bed frames bend and fold mattresses to accommodate the sleeper’s comfort preferences, so it makes sense that mattresses used with this type of frame would wear out more quickly. One way to prevent unnecessary wear and tear to a mattress is to look for a model specifically designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the position changes of an adjustable bed, such as the Helix Midnight Luxe.
