How to get the best Memorial Day mattress deals
Research early
Finding a mattress that’s a good fit for your sleep preferences can be a long process, so the earlier you start, the more likely you are to find a mattress that’s right for you. If you prefer to test a mattress in person before buying online, check whether any local stores carry the brands and models you’re interested in. If so, you can try your top choices in person to ensure they’re comfortable for you, then purchase them online during a sales event. It’s important to consider your body type, preferred sleep position, and whether you’re sleeping alone or with a partner.
Buy online
Shopping online can be a great way to find the best product for your needs at the best price. Brick-and-mortar stores typically only carry a small selection of mattress brands and models, which doesn’t give you many options to choose from, and most stores don’t include sleep trials.
If your mattress of choice is unavailable in-store, most mattresses on this list offer trial periods of 100 days or more. This allows you to test the mattress in the comfort of your own home and decide if it’s the right one for you. When you shop online, you have access to hundreds of models and brands with varying levels of firmness, so you can find the best fit for your preferences.
What kind of mattress should I buy on Memorial Day?
Finding a deal on Memorial Day is a great reason to invest in a new mattress, but price is just one factor to consider before you make a purchase. Your personal preference and sleep habits play an important role in determining which mattress is best for you. We suggest looking at the materials used, firmness, bounce, and bed size before you make a choice.
Materials used
Coils, foam, and latex are the most common materials used to manufacture mattresses. Coils are found in innerspring and hybrid models. Coils tend to provide a lot of support and bounce, while allowing air flow that aids in temperature regulation.
Memory foam mattresses are made from layers of foam, often in varying degrees of firmness, with more supportive layers forming the core and responsive memory foam layers on top. Foam is also found in hybrid models, layered on top of a supportive innerspring core. The combination of these two materials gives a mattress support and durability, while the foam layers provide pressure relief and responsiveness.
Latex is an alternative to foam. Because it is derived naturally from rubber trees, it is considered to be a more eco-friendly option. Latex tends to provide comfort and support that is similar to foam. We have found it to be more responsive than memory foam, meaning that it rebounds quickly and easily after compression. This material could be a good fit for someone with mobility issues.
Firmness
Mattress firmness is most often measured on a 1 to 10 scale, with extra soft mattresses ranked as a 1, medium mattresses a 5, and extra firm mattresses a 10. We have found that perception of firmness is different from person to person, and the way you experience a mattress could be very different from the experience of another person.
Stomach sleepers and back sleepers tend to require medium to medium firm mattresses to maintain a neutral spine, while the best mattress for side sleepers is one that is soft enough to contour to their body.
Different levels of firmness are often better suited to specific body types. Heavy people will compress a mattress more than an average weight person, requiring a firmer mattress in order to keep their spine aligned. A lighter person (less than 130 pounds) will find mattresses feel more firm, and they may be more comfortable on a softer model. Edge support, or how stable the perimeter of a bed remains under pressure, is another factor worth keeping in mind. Good edge support is typically appreciated by couples and heavy people, allowing sleepers to stretch out or sleep near the edge without concerns of rolling off the bed.
Lastly, if you are struggling with back pain, we have found that the best mattress for back pain is firm enough to help the sleeper maintain a neutral spine.
Bounce
The bounce of a mattress, also called responsiveness, refers to how quickly a mattress rebounds after compression. A more responsive mattress prevents the feeling that you are sinking into the bed when you are trying to move. Partnered sleepers often prefer a mattress with some bounce because they find it aids in more natural movement during sex. However, motion isolation is something to keep in mind to balance out the bounce, since one person’s movement could disturb a light sleeper.
Bed size
If you share a bed with a partner, a larger bed like a king, split king or cal king, will give you more room to spread out to sleep. Heavy people and taller people may also find they are more comfortable in a larger bed.
When looking at bed size, bigger isn’t always better. It is helpful to keep the size of your space in mind, along with any existing furniture in your bedroom. If you’re shopping for a college student, it is worth taking a look at bed size as many dorm beds frames are suited for a twin XL mattress.
How to know when I need a new mattress
While age is typically the clearest indication that a mattress needs replaced, each type of mattress has its own suggested lifespan, and these suggestions can vary between brands. If you’re not certain if it is time to replace your mattress, there are signs you can watch for before you decide.
Waking up stiff or sore or having trouble getting comfortable enough to sleep may indicate that your mattress is no longer meeting your comfort needs. If you notice visible sagging, water damage, tears, or lumps, it is likely time for a replacement. Additionally, if your asthma or allergies have taken a turn for the worse, this could be caused by dust mite, mold, or dead skin buildup in an older mattress.
Bottom line
Mattresses are an expensive investment, so planning to make a purchase after finding the best Memorial Day mattress sales is a good strategy to save money. When shopping for your mattress, you should consider the type of sleeper you are (back, side, stomach, or combination), your personal preferences, and your budget. Our Reviews Team has personally tested every mattress we featured on our list above, so you can decide which is best for your unique sleep needs.

While it is true that Memorial Day is one of the best times to save money on a new mattress, you may not need to wait until Memorial Day to make your purchase. Some brands start sales on May 1st, so you can get a head start.
Many Memorial Day mattress sales run from May 1 through the holiday weekend or sometimes through the following weekend into the first days of June. Other brands, like Brooklyn Bedding, have a preview sale (starting before Memorial Day Weekend), a weekend sale (during the holiday weekend), and an extended sale (after the holiday weekend ends).
