Problems sleeping are common among older adults and may become even worse if you’re sleeping on a mattress that isn’t comfortable for your needs [1] Tatineny, P., et. al. Sleep in the Elderly. Our expert take

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a medium-firm style mattress made from six internal layers of memory foam and individually encased pocketed coils, not including the top and base covers. Puffy rates the firmness of this mattress between five and seven out of 10. Our testers found it was about 5.5 out of 10. If you’re looking for a firmer mattress, read our review of the best firm mattresses.

The top layers of the Lux Hybrid are made from gel-infused foams designed to regulate the sleeper’s temperature throughout the night. Based on our testing, this mattress scored four out of five for cooling. The layer below is a two-inch layer of foam that’s highly responsive to changes in pressure, which should help combination sleepers move easily throughout the night.

The contouring coils adapt to give support where it’s needed based on the pressure being applied to the mattress. The coils are also encased in high-density memory foam, which not only helps this layer absorb movement but enhances the edge support. This is a good feature for combination sleepers who may roll around a lot while sleeping. Strong edge support can help prevent sleepers from falling over the edge of the mattress.

Below the coil layer is a firm foam layer designed to give the sleeper extra support and the mattress additional stability and motion isolation The ability of a mattress to keep movement on one side of the bed from affecting the other side. . The foam absorbs the impact of movement, keeping sleepers on opposite sides of the bed from feeling movements from across the mattress. Our testers gave the Lux Hybrid a score of five out of five for motion isolation and four out of five for its support.

Our recommendation

  • Light sleepers who are easily disturbed by a partner’s movements

Our expert take

The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a medium-firm style mattress with a plushy top layer and supportive core. Not including the base cover and quilted top cover, this mattress has eight internal layers of wool, foam, and contouring adapting coils. Puffy rates the firmness of this mattress between four and six out of 10. Our testers rated it 5.5 out of 10.

The top foam layers of the mattress give the sleeper a favorable sinking Good contouring sinkage can give sleepers the feeling of being “hugged” by their mattress, but too much sink can result in misalignment of the spine, especially for stomach and back sleepers. sensation. This gives the sleeper the feeling of a deep hug from the materials without being too stuck in the mattress. You’re then met with a more firm foam layer that gives the body comfortable contouring and support. Our testers scored the Royal Hybrid four out of five for support.

If you’re looking for a mattress that offers good sinkage and minimal bounce, read our full review of the best memory foam mattresses.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress on an adjustable bed frame
The Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress has a soft-to-the-touch cover made from cooling materials designed to regulate temperature and wick away moisture for hot sleepers.

The combination of gel-infused foams and wool throughout the mattress gives the Royal Hybrid a cooling score of 4.5 out of five, making it a good choice for sleepers who tend to get hot throughout the night. The wool blend near the top of the mattress also helps to wick away moisture, so if you do find yourself in a sweat, the wool should help keep that moisture off your skin and the top material of the mattress.

The Royal Hybrid has a five-zone support layer that gives targeted support to the sleeper’s head, neck, shoulders, back, and legs. Our tester felt that this mattress “contoured well around traditionally high-pressure points, like lower back and shoulders, and it was able to relieve discomfort in those areas.”

The coils in this mattress also help isolate motion Motion isolation is the ability of a mattress to keep movement on one side of the bed from affecting the other side. to one area of the bed. We gave this mattress a score of 4.5 out of five for motion isolation, which means it should be a good fit for couples who don’t want to feel their partner’s movements throughout the night.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Side sleepers who may find the soft plushy top layers of this mattress offer good comfort for shoulders and hips
  • Sleepers who want to feel a deep hug from their mattress without excessive sinkage

Who may want to avoid it

  • Stomach sleepers who might want to try a firmer style mattress to prevent hips from sinking into the mattress, which can cause spinal misalignment
  • Shoppers on a budget who may find this mattress is too expensive

Our expert take

The Puffy adjustable base is a good choice if you want added comfort to help relieve muscle and joint pain to promote better sleep. Sleeping in an inclined position has been shown to reduce snoring and improve some measures of sleep quality in a healthy adult population [2] JMIR Publications. Sleeping in an Inclined Position to Reduce Snoring and Improve Sleep: In-home Product Intervention Study. Found on the internet at https://formative.jmir.org/2022/4/e30102. . The Puffy adjustable base comes with two user-programmable memory buttons, a flat button to set the base flat, and a ZG button for a zero-gravity position The zero-gravity preset was developed by NASA to mimic a state of weightlessness, which is achieved by creating a 120-degree angle between the torso and knees. . Puffy’s zero-gravity position raises the head of the bed 10 degrees and the leg section 30 degrees, creating a feeling of weightlessness. Puffy also offers free delivery in two to five business days if you need your adjustable bed base quickly.

  • Independent head and foot adjustability: You can independently move the head and foot portions of the base, which helps you customize your position in bed.
  • Dual massage zones: You can turn the head and foot massage zones on simultaneously or separately, and you’re able to separately adjust the intensity of each massage zone.
  • Wireless remote control: Wired adjustable bed remotes can get tangled and sometimes don’t reach far enough to use comfortably. With a wireless remote, you can use it from any spot or position, and store it wherever you’d like.
  • Universal headboard attachment: The Puffy adjustable base comes with a universal headboard mount. You can attach the headboard of your choice to your adjustable bed.
  • Dual USB charging ports: A double USB charging port on both sides of the Puffy adjustable base means you and your sleep partner can charge your phone, tablet, or other devices without getting out of bed or taking up a wall outlet.
  • Adjustable leg height: You can adjust the legs of the adjustable base to five possible height combinations, with 11.5 ″ as the maximum leg height.
  • LED lighting: Press a button on the remote control and lights illuminate underneath and around the perimeter of the Puffy bed. This lighting is helpful for walking around the bed at night and getting into or out of bed in the dark.
  • One-touch presets: Presets are programmed positions with a corresponding button on the wireless remote. One touch of the button adjusts the base to the preset position.

Despite the average 4.8 out of 5 score for Puffy adjustable bed reviews on the company website, not everyone will find it ideal. Although the Puffy adjustable base has some great features, it is not the best choice if you want more advanced technology like sleep insights, Bluetooth connectivity, or smart home compatibility.

It’s also not a good fit if you and your sleep partner prefer a California king bed because the Puffy adjustable base is not available in that size. Another drawback is that the company does not offer white-glove delivery service, meaning you will have to move the base inside your home and set it up yourself.

For more information about which adjustable bases are best, see our review of the best adjustable beds.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Sleepers with sleep apnea who may appreciate the customizable elevation to prevent snoring
  • Those who sleep with pain because they find the zero gravity function relieves pressure on the spine

Who may want to avoid it

  • Sleepers who already sleep on a mattress that isn’t compatible with an adjustable base
  • Sleepers who have a California king size mattress

What is a Puffy mattress made of?

Puffy makes hybrid and all-foam mattresses. All Puffy mattresses are made with CertiPUR-US® Certified foams, which means they’re tested for quality by an independent source and are made without chemicals like mercury, lead, and formaldehyde.

Covers for each Puffy mattress vary slightly, but each is quilted and made with cooling fibers. Some models incorporate a filling layer beneath the cover that’s made with blended wool for additional cooling and moisture-wicking. You should note that Puffy mattresses are not made with organic materials. If you want to learn more about the best organic mattresses, read our full review.

All mattresses, other than the all-foam Puffy Cloud, are hybrid style. Hybrid means they’re made from a combination of foams and coils. Puffy uses individually encased, contour-adapting coils to provide variable pressure relief in targeted areas. Coils are encased with high-density foam for additional motion absorption and enhanced perimeter support.

Who is Puffy best for?

Both Puffy mattresses we reviewed above are 5.5 out of 10 for firmness, making them medium-firm mattresses. This firmness can accommodate many sleeping preferences and positions, which makes it a great choice for combination sleepers.

We like the Royal Hybrid specifically for side sleepers since it has a plush cover and top layer to contour the side of the body and relieve pressure on hips and shoulders. The favorable sinkage should also help prevent compression and discomfort in the shoulders. For more options, read our full article on the best mattresses for side sleepers.

To help combat back pain, Puffy uses contour-adapting coils in all its hybrid mattresses. The coils are designed to react to changes in pressure, so if one part of your body is putting more pressure on the material than another part, the coils will respond by balancing that pressure, making this a good fit for sleepers with back pain. The coils are also individually encased in high-density foam to help them absorb motion and prevent the coils from bouncing back and causing discomfort while the sleeper is transferring positions. For more information, read our full review of the best mattresses for back pain.

The Lux Hybrid or Royal Hybrid could be a great choice for hot sleepers looking for a mattress to help regulate temperature throughout the night and wick moisture. They both incorporate cooling designs and materials and were noticeably cooler during testing.  If you’re a hot sleeper, and want to learn more about your cooling options, read our full review of the best cooling mattresses.

Puffy might not be best for shoppers on a budget since most of their models start at more than $2,000, which is relatively expensive compared to other brands. For more budget-friendly prices, read our review of the best affordable mattresses.

Who should use a Puffy adjustable base?

A Puffy adjustable bed base can be a great way to improve your sleep quality. Adjustable beds offer a customizable sleeping experience while allowing you to adjust your upper and lower body to different angles to help you get better sleep.

The most common benefit of an adjustable bed is the zero-gravity function. This position was originally developed by NASA to mimic a state of weightlessness, which is achieved by creating a 120-degree angle between the torso and knees. This is a great way to keep pressure off the spine and relieve pain.

“An adjustable bed has many benefits, such as relieving aches and pains, reducing snoring, improving posture, and improving blood circulation. An adjustable bed can conform into a variety of different positions. The most common position is the natural S shape, which helps to reduce pressure points in the body. Although an adjustable mattress has many potential benefits, it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. It’s important to make sure you feel comfortable to get a full night’s sleep.”

– John Gallucci Jr., MS, ATC, PT, DPT, CEO of JAG Physical Therapy

Bottom line

Puffy makes high-quality medium-firm mattresses that can be a great addition to your bedroom or guest room. Both the Lux Hybrid and Royal Hybrid provide good sinkage and comfortable contouring with top foam layers and adaptable coils, and both would be a great fit for side and back sleepers.

But neither mattress is particularly great for stomach sleepers since they are likely too soft to offer ideal support for the lower back. The Serenity adjustable base has a simple design that’s easy to use but might not be great for those who want connectivity to smart devices. Overall, Puffy products are less budget friendly than other brands, but with frequent promotions throughout the year you may be able to get products for a large discount.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Puffy states that all its mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases.

How long an adjustable base lasts greatly depends on usage. On average, adjustable beds last around 10 years. Puffy adjustable bases come with a limited warranty, but the warranty only covers defects in the material or workmanship.

The lifetime of a mattress depends on the usage. When we spoke with a Puffy representative, they said Puffy mattresses can last up to 10 years. Similar to their adjustable bases, Puffy mattresses come with a limited lifetime warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship.

Our Reviews Team gave Puffy a 9.1 rating and DreamCloud a 9.3 rating based on many factors like affordability and quality of the products. DreamCloud mattresses tend to be better for those on a budget since they are generally more affordable than Puffy mattresses, although both use high-quality materials.
