Oct. 22, 2024, Arlington, VA—The National Council on Aging (NCOA), the national voice for every person’s right to age well, is answering older adults’ questions about the latest Covid and flu vaccines this respiratory season.

Four years past the onset of the Covid pandemic, confusion remains about what vaccines are needed and when. NCOA will answer common questions such as:

  • How Do mRNA Vaccines Work?
  • What Are the Advantages of mRNA Vaccines?
  • Why Are Older Adults More Likely to Get Covid If They’re Not Vaccinated?
  • What’s the Difference Between Flu A vs. Flu B?
  • What’s the Difference Between Flu and Covid?
  • When Should I Get My Flu and Covid Shot?
  • How Effective Is the Flu Shot?
  • How Effective Is the Covid Shot?

"Getting vaccinated is still the best defense against serious illness, hospitalization, and death related to Covid and flu,” said Kathleen Cameron, Senior Director at NCOA’s Center for Healthy Aging. "Older adults should talk to their doctors about what vaccines are right for them this season because there are options."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people over age 65 get the updated 2024-2025 Covid and flu vaccines to protect against severe illness this fall and winter. CDC says it is safe to receive both vaccines at the same visit.
