About 50+ Senior Tech Connect

In today's world, many routine tasks such as making a medical appointment or ordering groceries often require some technology skills, causing many older adults who lack access or training on these new technologies to feel left behind. This reality was only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the idea for the 50+ Tech Connect Fair—an event created to help older adults learn about and become more comfortable using the latest technology.

Held at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center in Albuquerque, the event featured a variety of technology classes, demonstrations, information booths covering topics ranging from smartphone basics and social media, to telehealth and online shopping, and so much more. In order to provide a variety of helpful resources for older adults, the separtment partnered with over two dozen local businesses and organizations, including student volunteers who assisted with many of the tech classes. More than 500 people participated.

Key takeaways from 50+ Senior Tech Connect:

  • Not only did the Department of Senior Affairs help fulfill a need in the community, but we also helped bridge the gap between our community's younger and older generations by using a common interest in technology to confront stereotypes and push back against ageism.
  • The Department of Senior Affairs has since made this an annual event to ensure they are continuing to meet the technology needs of Albuquerque seniors, while working to bridge the generational gap between our older adults, younger adults, and youth.
  • In order to ensure the event's success, the Department of Senior Affairs secured the support of multiple city entities including the Albuquerque Mayor's Office, Cultural Services Department, City Planning Department, Solid Waste Department, Technology and Innovations Department, Albuquerque's Citizen Contact Center, Albuquerque Police, and Albuquerque Fire and Rescue.
  • Additional event partners/sponsors included over two dozen local businesses and nonprofit organizations as well as student volunteers.
