The True Cost of Aging: The Equity in Aging Collaborative and The Elder Index

Event

How much does it really cost to grow older in America? The answer to that question is not easy to come by. Enter the Elder Index, a tool designed to more accuarately measure the true cost of aging.

Developed by the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston with Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW), the Elder Index is currently maintained through a partnership between the Gerontology Institute and NCOA.

For nearly two years, members of the Equity in Aging Collaborative have worked to create a national and community-driven strategy to elevate the use of the Elder Index.

During this webinar, a virtual Capitol Hill briefing, participants will:

  • Learn more about how the Elder Index can help identify the true cost of aging around issues of food security, SSI modernization, and economic security for all older adults—with a specific focus on communities of color, women, LGBTQ+, rural, and low-income older adults
  • Hear from members of the Equity in Aging Collaborative about that group's capacity-building efforts to expand use of the Elder Index
  • View an Equity in Aging Story Gallery featuring true stories from older adults across the country, capturing the actual cost of aging

The briefing's goals:

  • Elevate policy solutions to making all older adults more food-secure
  • Discuss pathways to modernizing Social Security income
  • Use the Elder Index as a more accurate way to calculate income insecurity in America
