5 Best Adjustable Beds of 2024: Expert Tested
Key Takeaways
- Our pick for the top adjustable bed is the Nectar Adjustable Base Plus because it has features often found in more expensive adjustable bases, like massage mode, under-bed lighting, and built-in USB ports.
- We looked for intuitive bases to operate with quiet, smooth movements and a good range of motion.
- Adjustable bases in this list cost $699–$3,596 depending on brand and size.
- The CDC estimates that 50 million people in the U.S. experience chronic pain, and our survey results suggest many could sleep better with an adjustable bed.
- Adjustable bases can also reduce snoring in some people and assist with getting in and out of bed.
According to our 2023 survey of 1,000 adjustable bed users, 85–90% told us that their adjustable bed helped them sleep better. The same people had self-reported symptoms of insomnia, chronic pain, snoring, and acid reflux. Adjustable beds may improve symptoms of conditions like sleep apnea and snoring by elevating the head and feet to open airways [3] Iannella G, et al. Some adjustable beds offer even more benefits with built-in massage modes to promote relaxation, under-bed lighting to help prevent falls, and USB ports to conveniently charge your phone or hearing aids within easy reach. Our Reviews Team considered these features plus quiet operation, ease of use, and price when looking for the best adjustable beds.
After testing 30 models, our Reviews Team chose the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame as the best adjustable bed overall. It has five presets, four USB charging ports, under-bed lighting, a 50-night trial period, and an optional in-home setup. Scroll down to learn more about our top pick and runners-up.

What we look for in an adjustable bed
We look for several important factors when testing and scoring adjustable bases, such as:
Easy controls
Using an adjustable base shouldn’t be complicated. We like remote controls with several presets, custom slots, and easy-to-press buttons.
Convenient delivery
Because adjustable beds can be heavy, we like brands that offer in-home setup, also known as white-glove delivery.
Smooth, quiet operation
We avoid adjustable beds with loud motors and jarring movements. Your comfort (and your partner’s) is a priority.
A trial period
We prefer companies that offer trial periods because adjustable bases usually don’t come with one. Even a short trial period is better than none.
Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame: Best Adjustable Bed Overall
Our expert take on the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame
The Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame is the best adjustable bed for people who want as many features as possible. In addition to the usual presets like zero gravity and anti-snoring, it offers three massage modes, under-bed lighting, and four USB ports. The Nectar Adjustable Bed Frame is also one of the few options on the market with a trial period (50 nights).
This base comes with one memory position and five preset positions (TV, reading, zero gravity, anti-snore, and flat). No other brand offers this many presets, despite being one of the most sought-after features. To control the base, you can use a remote control or smartphone app.
The base works with platform bed frames, but there’s no way to attach a standalone headboard. Its height can be adjusted during setup by attaching 3- or 8-inch legs and 2-inch extenders. The base itself is 4 inches high, so the total height can reach up to 15 inches before adding a mattress.
The Nectar warranty is significantly shorter than other brands in this review. But there is a way to upgrade your coverage. During checkout, you can add an extended warranty through Extend starting at $169, which will lengthen your warranty to 10 years. This will also add coverage for accidental damage—a service that, to our knowledge, no other brand offers.
According to customer service, white-glove delivery that includes complete setup of your new bed frame is $199 for the first item, free for the second, and $49 for each additional item. But in the past, customer service has told us that white-glove delivery was only available for certain adjustable base sizes or if you also purchased a mattress. Since the policy changes frequently, check with customer support to ensure your purchase qualifies for white-glove delivery, as well as the pricing.
The base arrives in a box that weighs 149 pounds, so it’s a good idea to ask someone to help you bring it inside if you decide to skip professional setup.
What about the Nectar Classic Adjustable Base?
Nectar also sells the Classic Adjustable Base for $100 less than the Premier Adjustable Base. The Classic has no massage feature, no USB ports, no programmable memory, and no smartphone app, and it supports 100 pounds less than the Premier. Our Reviews Team thinks the Classic isn’t a good deal. It’s worth spending an extra $100 for the full-featured Premier.
Compatible mattresses
The Nectar Adjustable Bed Frame works with any mattress compatible with an adjustable bed frame. In general, that includes most foam and hybrid mattresses, but check with the manufacturer to confirm. All Nectar mattresses are compatible with this base and come with a one-year trial period and a lifetime warranty. Our Reviews Team considers the Nectar Hybrid the best affordable mattress and the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid the best cooling mattress.
If you’re looking for a deal, Nectar offers 50%–65% off your purchase when you get the Nectar Adjustable Bundle. This includes your choice of mattress, the Serenity Bedding Bundle, an adjustable bed frame, and the 10-year extended warranty. This is a good deal if you want a memory foam mattress like the Nectar Classic, but DreamCloud is our pick for bundling a hybrid mattress with your adjustable base. Scroll down to learn more about DreamCloud.
Our tester on the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame:
“I’m impressed by how the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame goes from flat to fully elevated in less than 20 seconds. The remote is easy to use, but you can use an app called Nectar Move too. My only word of advice is to get someone to help you if you don’t choose professional delivery. This base is really heavy.”
Who may love it
- People who want premium features at an affordable price
- Sleepers on a budget who are also in the market for a memory foam mattress and want a good bundle deal
- Anyone looking for a trial period
- People who want professional delivery and setup
Who may want to avoid it
- Anyone who wants a remote with multiple presets
- People on a budget who are also in the market for a hybrid mattress (DreamCloud has the better deal)
Customer reviews
The Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame has a 4.7 star rating out of 5 with more than 2,700 reviews on its website. Many reviewers mention that the frame is easy to assemble, works well, and has had a positive impact on their sleep quality.
“This bed was easy to assemble, sturdy, and so very comfortable. Best sleep we have had in years. The price is very reasonable, especially for the high quality. ”
— Mary Z., verified buyer, on 6/1/2024

Saatva Adjustable Base Plus: Best Adjustable Bed with Free Setup
Our expert take on the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus
Adjustable bases arrive in heavy boxes that can weigh 150 pounds or more, so you may want to consider a company that offers professional in-home delivery and setup (what we’ve referred to as white-glove delivery). Most brands charge $130 or more for this service—if they offer it at all—but every Saatva customer gets it for free. Delivery personnel bring the adjustable base into your home, set it up, and show you how to use each feature. It saves time, protects you from muscle strain, and gives you the confidence of knowing your bed is working as it should. They can even haul away your old base.
The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus comes with one programmable button and presets for zero gravity, anti-snore, flat, and head-up (elevates the head of the bed to its maximum head height) positions. This base also offers under-bed lighting, full-body massage functions, and wall alignment ⓘ A feature that shifts the head of the bed closer to the wall as it elevates, keeping you closer to your nightstand. 1 as extra useful perks. The remote even has a flashlight to help you navigate to and from the bed at night, which may help prevent falls. During installation, the base height can be adjusted in half-inch increments from 13–18 inches.
Unlike the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base, the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus has no USB ports and no smartphone app. Otherwise, Saatva offers similar features with a much longer warranty and a lower price. Unfortunately, Saatva doesn’t offer a trial period for the Adjustable Base Plus.
Another reason we like Saatva is its reputation. The company is accredited by BBB with an A+ rating, as well as an impressive 4.83 out of 5 stars from more than 1,700 customer reviews. The company has a similar rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars based on more than 1,100 reviews on Trustpilot. Reviewers from both sites rave about the quality of the mattresses, the customer service, and the delivery process. Excellent reviews are rare in the adjustable bed industry, so earning near five-star ratings on multiple review sites is quite a feat.
What about the regular Saatva Adjustable Base?
You can save at least $250 by purchasing the Saatva Adjustable Base instead of the Adjustable Base Plus, but our Reviews Team doesn’t recommend it. The regular Saatva Adjustable Base has no presets, memory slots, under-bed lighting, or massage mode. It also comes in fewer sizes than the Plus.
If you just want the basics, the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base is a more affordable option with presets and memory slots. Scroll down for our review.
Compatible mattresses
Saatva sells seven mattresses that are compatible with the adjustable base:
- 11.5-inch Saatva Classic luxury hybrid innerspring
- Saatva Solaire
- Saatva Rx
- Saatva Latex Hybrid
- Zenhaven
- Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid
- Loom & Leaf Ultra-Premium Memory Foam
The Saatva HD and 14.5-inch Saatva Classic luxury hybrid innerspring won’t work with an adjustable base because they’re too thick to easily fold. If you want to pair another mattress with the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus, check with the manufacturer to confirm it can be used with an adjustable base. Using the wrong type of mattress with an adjustable base could void the mattress’s warranty.
Our tester on the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus:
“I like that the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus has a remote with backlit buttons so you can see what you’re doing if you need to make adjustments in the middle of the night. I also think it’s nice that it has a backup battery so you’re not stuck in an awkward position if the power goes out.”
Who may love it
- People looking for free delivery and setup
- Shoppers who prioritize excellent customer service and brand reputation
- Sleepers who think massage mode may help them relax and fall asleep
- People who may benefit from under-bed lighting automatically turning on when they get up at night
Who may want to avoid it
- Anyone looking for a trial period
Customer reviews
The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus has a 4.8 star rating out of 5 with more than 80 reviews on its website. Many reviewers express satisfaction with their delivery and setup experience.
“The new frame is great. The delivery fellows removed the old spring frame and replaced it with the new adjustable one. They showed me how to use it and made sure everything worked perfectly. […] The fellows were very polite and answered all my questions. This delivery service connected to Saatva deserves a five star rating.”
— Loretta F., verified buyer, on 3/26/2024

— Jerry, verified buyer, on 2/8/2024
“My whole experience dealing with this company was excellent. Everyone was helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant. DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame: Best Adjustable Base and Hybrid Mattress Bundle
Our expert take of the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame
The DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame is essentially the same as the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame. Both brands are owned by the same parent company, Resident. But there’s a good reason to buy from DreamCloud instead of Nectar: better savings on the hybrid mattress and base bundle. Although both brands offer a bundle with 50% off the total price of an adjustable base and mattress, you end up saving more money with DreamCloud if you’re shopping for a hybrid mattress. Nectar has slightly better prices for bundling a memory foam mattress with the adjustable base.
For example, a queen-size Nectar Premier Hybrid bundled with an adjustable base costs $1,848. A queen-size DreamCloud Premier Hybrid bundled with an adjustable base costs $1,698.
You also get the seven-piece Serenity bedding bundle (two cooling pillows, a mattress protector, and a four-piece sheet set) and a 10-year extended warranty with the DreamCloud bundle, as with the Nectar bundle. Professional setup starts at $199—also the same price as Nectar.
Compatible mattresses
All DreamCloud mattresses are compatible with the adjustable base. The company sells three memory foam and three hybrid mattresses. Our Reviews Team prefers the hybrid mattresses due to good pressure relief, edge stability, and support for the lower back. You may be able to use your existing mattress with the DreamCloud adjustable base if it’s a memory foam or hybrid mattress. Check with the mattress manufacturer before using it with an adjustable bed.
Our tester on the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame:
“We thought it was easy to set up and use the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame. The remote is simple but easy to understand, and the adjustments are smooth.”
Who may love it
- People who are also in the market for a hybrid mattress and want a great deal
- Those looking for professional setup services
- Sleepers who think massage mode may help them relax and fall asleep
- People who may benefit from under-bed lighting automatically turning on when they get up at night
Who may want to avoid it
- People who are also in the market for a memory foam mattress (Nectar has the better deal)
- Anyone looking for a long warranty
Customer reviews
The DreamCloud Adjustable Base has a 4.7 star rating out of 5 with more than 2,000 reviews on its website. Many reviewers are happy with their base and say it has improved their sleep, but a notable number of negative reviews say the base quickly stopped working or that the mattress shifted from side to side during adjustments.
“As a bigger guy, 360 lbs. I need a box spring that can support me. The wooden ones always break in places and make the mattress uncomfortable, so this time I bought this frame and it is perfect. The electric features like massage and adjusting the bed make it easier to read and sleep at night.”
— Steven R., verified buyer, on 10/30/23
“Wish I would have bought the bed and frame sooner. I have difficulty sleeping and would toss and turn most of the night. I have had my new DreamCloud bed and adjustable frame for several months now and have to say I am sleeping better. Love being able to adjust the bed for reading or TV. The massage feature is definitely a bonus!”
— Cheryl C., verified buyer, on 10/15/23
“I have been sleeping in a chair for years and finally bought this bed. I’m so happy with it. The only complaint I have is that it Has you to be reset from the bottom of the bed because occasionally the controller doesn’t work.”
— Patti W., verified buyer, on 10/15/23

Helix Adjustable Base: Best for Memory Presets
Our expert take on the Helix Adjustable Base
According to our recent survey of adjustable bed owners, price and features were the top two most important considerations when purchasing an adjustable bed. Helix impressed our team by offering its adjustable base at a lower average price than competitors while still offering many of the same features. The base retails for $1,248 but is often on sale for less than $1,000.
Like our top pick from Nectar, the Helix Adjustable Base has three massage modes and under-bed lighting. It also features two USB ports, a remote control, and three memory programs. On the downside, the base can’t be returned once it’s out of the original packaging.
The Helix Adjustable base has only one preset: zero gravity. After you decide which angles work best for you, you can program other popular presets, like anti-snore or TV, into one of the memory slots. Our testers said this was easy: “You hold one of the colored memory buttons on the remote for seven seconds, and it saves.” The base doesn’t connect to a smartphone app for additional control.
Professional setup is available in some ZIP codes starting at $139. During installation, the height can be adjusted in 3-inch increments up to 12 inches. The base comes with a 10-year warranty.
Compatible mattresses
All Helix mattresses work with the Helix Adjustable Base. The company sells more than 20 mattresses—including one of our picks for best mattress, the Helix Midnight Luxe—so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find one that suits your needs. Unlike Nectar and DreamCloud, Helix doesn’t offer special discounts for bundling an adjustable base with a mattress. Most hybrid or memory foam mattresses should work with the Helix Adjustable Base. Still, it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer before purchasing an adjustable bed mattress, as some will void the mattress’s warranty if it’s used with an adjustable base. Mattresses that are too tall or stiff also won’t bend easily on an adjustable base.
Our tester on the Helix Adjustable Base:
“I needed two other people to help me lift the box and assemble it. Once it was put together, it was easier to push and pull the base around. I like that there’s a USB port and a port that fits iPhone chargers.
Who may love it
- People who want to customize the remote
- Those looking for professional setup services
- Sleepers who think massage mode may help them relax and fall asleep
- People who may benefit from under-bed lighting automatically turning on when they get up at night
Who may want to avoid it
- People who want a variety of preset positions on the remote
- Anyone looking for a trial period
Customer reviews
The Helix Adjustable Base has a 4.5 star rating out of 5 with more than 400 reviews on its website. Many reviewers say the base has improved their comfort while sleeping or lounging in bed.
“Lots of options for optimal comfort and to alleviate back pain. The under bed lights and USB ports are nice added features.”
— Vickie D., verified buyer, on 5/19/2024
“I love being able to sleep with my head tilted. I wasn’t sure about the vibrating but I love it!!”
— Deanna K., verified buyer, on 5/18/2024
“My husband and I really use the features of this bed more than I thought we would, especially the massage feature, which helps us drift off to sleep. Being able to raise the head just enough to help with snoring and GERD has been a great help.”
— Diana K., verified buyer, on 5/8/2024
Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base: Best Value Adjustable Bed
Our expert take on the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base
The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base is the best basic adjustable base for people on a budget. It starts at $699 for a twin XL but is often on sale for even less. It comes with a remote and an optional wristband to prevent the remote from getting lost in the sheets. The remote has four presets: zero gravity, anti-snore, lounge, and TV.
There’s also a large button to return the base to a flat position. You can fine-tune any setting with the up and down arrows, which are clearly labeled for the head and foot of the bed. Our testers noted that it takes about 45 seconds for the base to fully incline from a flat position, which they thought was smooth and gradual. “It’s a steady, slow movement, which I appreciate since I don’t want to feel like I’m being catapulted out of bed,” one tester said.
The remote also has a flashlight for safe navigation to and from the bed, plus two memory presets.
The base comes with a long power cord and a 10-year warranty but no trial period. Professional setup isn’t available.
What about the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Power Base?
Brooklyn Bedding sells an upgraded adjustable base called the Ascension Ultra. It adds two USB ports, massage mode, and under-bed lighting to the Ascension Luxe and starts at $1,099 for a twin XL.
If you want those bells and whistles, we think it’s worth checking out the Helix Adjustable Base instead. It’s more affordable and comes with a 50-night trial period. On the other hand, it offers fewer presets than the Brooklyn Bedding bases.
Compatible mattresses
All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses work with the Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base. This brand often appears on our best-of lists as a budget-friendly option and a good choice for side sleepers or people with shoulder pain. Brooklyn Bedding also makes one of the best firm mattresses—the Plank Firm—and one of the best mattresses for higher-weight people—the Titan Plus.
Other memory foam and hybrid mattresses should be compatible with the Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base. Check with the mattress manufacturer to confirm.
Our tester on the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base
“I like the slow, steady, and quiet movements of the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base and the flashlight that’s built into the remote. The TV setting made me feel squashed, but the Lounge setting felt more practical for watching TV and reading.”
Who may love it
- Sleepers on a budget who want basic adjustable bed functionality
- People looking for a base with easy-to-use presets
Who may want to avoid it
- People who want professional setup services
Customer reviews
The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base has a 4.7 star rating out of 5 with more than 220 reviews on its website. Most reviews are positive, and people say the base has improved their quality of sleep or reduced pain at night. Many reviewers recommend having someone help with setup.
“It’s great. Before my purchase I would wake up with sinus issues and pain in my legs and back. Now that I have the adjustable base, I can adjust the height of both my head and legs. I now wake up pain free.”
— Leyla C., verified buyer, on 5/25/2024
“We have had the power base for around 100 days now and it works very well. It is well built, quiet and about half the cost of other power bases that we have priced.”
— Allen C., verified buyer, on 4/29/2024
“I am so glad I bought this adjustable base. […] It adjusts easily, has a quiet motor, and I love the “flat” button that you press once to return it to the flat position. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a simple, inexpensive adjustable bed option.”
— Maureen B., verified buyer, on 3/22/24

Another brand to consider
While our Reviews Team feels the five models outlined above represent the best adjustable beds available, there is one runner-up to consider.
Puffy
The Puffy Serenity Adjustable Base comes with a generous 101-night trial period, which is among the longest in the industry. It is also priced fairly compared to other brands in our list, starting at $1,199 before promotions.
This base is a great choice if you want to try your bed for an extended period to ensure it works for you. It didn’t make our list only because it doesn’t offer many standout features that rival its competitors, like Saatva or Nectar.
Puffy drawbacks
- No white-glove delivery (free delivery and setup of new mattress and removal of old mattress)
- Limited sizes available
- Minimal presets (only flat and zero gravity)

How we test adjustable beds
We began our testing process by researching and comparing adjustable bases, surveying 1,000 adjustable base users, interviewing sleep experts, physical therapists, and other medical professionals about the pros and cons of adjustable bases, and running a focus group to understand the adjustable bed buying process.
Once we understood what people look for in an adjustable base, we developed scoring criteria, which you can read about on our adjustable beds review methodology page.
Out of a list of 103 models, we initially chose 30 bases to test due to their competitive prices, features, warranties, and reputations. We continue to test more adjustable bases each month. Some adjustable bases are shipped to our studio for testing, and other models are tested in mattress showrooms throughout the U.S. Here’s a summary of what our testers evaluate:
Ease of use
Our testers use and analyze each adjustable base’s remote control. They assess whether the buttons are intuitive to use and easy to push. Testers press every button to make sure the base responds as expected, and they note whether anything surprising or confusing happens. They also look for interesting features that affect ease of use, such as USB charging port placement or a built-in flashlight on the remote.
If applicable, testers also use the base’s smartphone app, ensuring it’s easy to pair with the base. They evaluate the app’s navigation—is it easy to find the controls and presets? Is there anything unique on the app that isn’t available on the remote control?
Presets
Presets also affect ease of use. Our testers look for common presets on each remote: anti-snore, zero-gravity, and flat. They test each one to make sure it functions correctly, noting any bases that seem to offer excessive or minimal elevation compared to other bases on the same setting. If extra presets are present, testers try them and offer an opinion about their comfort and usefulness.
Next, our testers save a custom setting on the remote (if applicable) by following the instructions in the user manual.
Base adjustment
Testers measure how long it takes for the adjustable base to fully incline from a flat position, with slow, gradual movement preferred over a fast, catapult-like adjustment. Testers are also asked to describe the motion—is it smooth or jarring? Does the base elevate enough for comfortable lounging, or does it seem to have a limited range of motion?
Noise
Testers use a decibel meter to measure the motor’s noise level during adjustments. They’re also asked to listen for any other noises that come from the base when it isn’t being adjusted. We look for quiet motors and squeak-free bases that won’t disturb a sleeping partner.
Extra features
We like to see adjustable bases with convenient features, especially if the base remains affordable compared to the competition.
If applicable, our testers see how easy it is to reach USB charging ports and to plug in a charging cable while remaining in bed. We also ask our testers to try each massage mode and compare how it feels to other models that offer massage. They also trigger the under-bed lighting to test how fast it turns on and how well it illuminates the edge of the bed.
Setup
Testers look for features that could impact setup and convenience, such as cord length and adjustable leg heights. They also note whether an adjustable base seems unusually bulky or flimsy. Because adjustable bases can be heavy and unwieldy, we like brands that offer professional setup services.
Customer service
Testers contact the customer service line to ask questions about each model. We want to know if their call was answered promptly, if they felt pushed to make a sale, and whether the customer service representative seemed knowledgeable about the product. We also prefer models that offer free delivery, lengthy warranties, and trial periods.
To learn more about our research and testing, review our sleep methodology.
How to choose an adjustable bed
Here’s a closer look at the variety of features you can choose from when shopping for an adjustable bed.
Preset and custom positions
Adjustable bases may come with one-touch presets, meaning you can press a button on the remote, and the bed will adjust to a preset position. The most common presets are the anti-snore and zero-gravity positions. A button that returns the base to a flat position is also useful.
Raising the head of the bed can relieve issues like acid reflux, snoring, and sinus pressure. It’s also a great position for reading, watching TV, or working on a laptop. Foot elevation improves circulation and may reduce pressure on the lower back. It can even help relieve swelling in the legs and feet, making it particularly beneficial for those with circulation issues or pregnant sleepers.
Look for an adjustable base that allows you to save custom presets, too. If there’s a certain angle that feels comfortable while you sleep or lounge in bed, you can easily return to that position with the touch of a button.
Under-bed lighting
Many adjustable beds come equipped with under-bed LED lighting to illuminate the area under and around the edge of the bed, potentially reducing the risk of falling at night.
Massage
While adjustable bed massage settings feel more like vibration than kneading, they can promote relaxation. Some beds offer various massage modes, so you can choose between vibration patterns and intensities.
USB charging ports
USB ports built into the adjustable bed frame offers a power source for charging devices without the need to reach or get out of bed. USB-C ports are the most common type found on adjustable beds, but some include USB-A ports too.
Wall-hugging technology
This advanced feature shifts the head of the bed closer to the wall as it elevates, keeping you within reaching distance of your nightstand.
Custom leg heights
Proper mattress height can make it easier, safer, and more comfortable to get in and out of bed. To help you achieve the right height, most adjustable beds come with legs in various sizes. Unfortunately, height isn’t something you can adjust at the push of a button—you’ll have to disassemble the base if you want a taller or shorter bed in the future.
App or remote
Most adjustable beds are controlled through a remote. A few connect to a smartphone app instead, and some give you both options. Make sure the remote’s symbols are easy to understand and that the buttons are easy to press. Consider getting a corded remote to prevent it from getting lost.
Sleep tracking
Some adjustable beds include premium features like sleep tracking, which monitors your breathing or movement throughout the night to analyze the quality of your sleep. Often, sleep tracking features are AI-powered. The sleep analytics compiled through the tracking system may suggest ways to improve your sleep, or the bed may automatically adjust your position while you sleep; for example, the bed may raise your head to reduce snoring.
Professional setup
Adjustable beds require some assembly. Consider buying from a company that offers professional (also called white-glove) delivery and setup if you have limited strength or mobility.
Pros and cons of adjustable beds
Before you make the decision on whether an adjustable bed is right for you and your sleep needs, make sure to weigh the pros and cons.
Pros
- Head and foot adjustment options help accommodate mobility needs, certain medical issues (like chronic pain), and comfort preferences.
- Adjustability reduces a caregiver’s physical effort and risk for injury when transferring the person they care for in and out of bed.
- More than 90% of adjustable bed owners in our survey agreed they slept better after their purchase.
- Adjustable beds are great for activities like watching TV or reading.
Cons
- Adjustable beds can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
- Most adjustable beds do not come with a trial period.
- You may need to purchase a new mattress if yours is not compatible.
- Adjustable beds are extremely heavy, making them hard to move around.
Health benefits of adjustable beds
More than 40% of respondents to our survey of adjustable bed users reported their primary motivations for purchasing an adjustable bed were increased comfort and pain relief. Many sleepers find that elevating the foot of the bed can relieve pressure and pain in the lower back and legs for temporary relief, depending on your condition [5] Goldman S.M. Nocturnal Neuropathic Pain in Diabetic Patients May be Caused by Spinal Stenosis. Diabetic Medicine. Aug. 24, 2005. Found on the internet at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1464-5491.2005.01746.x .
You don’t need an adjustable base to try different sleep positions. You can wedge pillows under your upper back for a reclined position, which may reduce acid reflux. You can also place them under your legs to see if the position improves your sleep. If you can’t find your ideal position, an adjustable bed may be the way to go. Talk to your doctor about whether an adjustable bed is appropriate for you, in case there is a medical reason it would not be.
According to Houston-based board-certified psychiatrist and sleep doctor Chester Wu, sleep is important for recovery, so addressing pain-related sleep disturbance quickly is a high priority. “Sleep disturbances can limit the body’s capacity to manage chronic pain effectively,” he said. “Without adequate sleep, pain sensations become more intense, so sleep acts as a natural pain reliever.”
Older adults cite various health benefits from using adjustable beds. For example, 69.4% said they have an easier time getting in and out of their adjustable beds compared to their experience with standard beds.
Overall, 89.5% of the survey participants reported improved sleep. Here’s the breakdown of sleep quality improvement by health condition:
- Chronic pain: 92%
- Snoring: 91%
- Acid reflux: 91%
- Insomnia: 91%
- Mobility concerns: 90%
Sleep is also important for your mental health. “Chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of developing anxiety, depression, or addiction. It can also exacerbate existing mental health issues,” said Wu. “On the other hand, consistent and quality sleep reduces [the] risk of these conditions.”
Adjustable beds also can help caregivers prevent injury—both to themselves and the person they’re caring for. Elevating the head of the bed can help a person rise into a seated position, which makes assisted transfers into and out of bed easier. But if the person you care for has advanced mobility needs, you may benefit from purchasing a hospital bed through Medicare Part B instead. You could qualify for coverage if it’s deemed medically necessary by your doctor.
Cost of adjustable beds
Based on our analysis of more than 100 adjustable beds ranging in size from twin to California king, the average adjustable bed costs $1,834. The most affordable options start at a few hundred dollars, while the most expensive models cost $5,598.
Features like massage mode, smartphone app control, under-bed lighting, and USB ports tend to increase the cost of the adjustable bed.
Adjustable beds can be partially covered by Medicare if a doctor writes a prescription stating the bed is medically necessary. For those with a prescription and supporting medical records, Medicare may pay up to 80% of your adjustable bed.
Additionally, you may be able to pay for your adjustable bed using your health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA). If your doctor determines that an adjustable bed is medically necessary to treat a condition, you can use pre-tax funds from your HSA or FSA to purchase one. It’s important to double-check with your specific plan to confirm eligibility before purchasing, though.
How to save money on an adjustable bed
Like mattresses, adjustable beds tend to go on sale at specific times throughout the year. If possible, wait until Presidents Day or Memorial Day sales to get the best price on an adjustable bed. The Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Black Friday are other major sale holidays for most manufacturers.
You can also save money by skipping some of the more expensive features. For example, the massage mode may not be as intense as you’d like. Typically, the bed vibrates instead of kneading your muscles. You may want to visit a showroom to try this feature before committing, especially if you’re considering an adjustable bed that doesn’t come with a trial period.
Similarly, while built-in USB ports are convenient, they’re not the only option for charging your phone on your bedside table. If you already have a charging system that works for you, there’s no need to spend extra money for something you don’t need.
At the most basic level, an adjustable bed should elevate the feet and legs independently, have a quiet motor, and include useful presets and memory slots on its remote. Focus on these features to find a model within your budget.
Choosing a mattress for your adjustable bed
Now that you’ve done the research to find the best adjustable bed bases, it’s time to learn more about mattresses and how your mattress choice plays a role in your investment.
What is the difference between an adjustable bed and an adjustable mattress?
The term “adjustable bed” refers to a mechanical platform that elevates the head and foot of the bed on demand. An adjustable bed is also called an adjustable bed frame or adjustable base and is an independent item that does not include a mattress.
An adjustable mattress, on the other hand, is also called an air-chamber mattress. The air chambers inflate to create a firmer feel or deflate for a softer feel. You control these settings with a remote or smartphone app. Examples include the Saatva Solaire and Sleep Number mattresses.
Can I use a regular mattress on an adjustable bed?
If your mattress is made of memory foam, latex, or hybrid materials, it should work nicely with your adjustable bed base. The sweet spot for mattress thickness for an adjustable base is up to 13 inches. And while you may be able to use a mattress made with pocketed coils, innerspring mattresses are not typically constructed for use on adjustable bed frames. The best thing to do is to call the mattress manufacturer to double-check compatibility before investing in a new adjustable bed base. If your current mattress will not work with an adjustable base, you’ll need to factor the cost of a new mattress into your overall purchase.
Some brands sell packages that include an adjustable base and a compatible mattress. In some cases, this is more cost-effective than buying them separately. Plus, it ensures compatibility, which can offer peace of mind.

How to shop for a mattress
The traditional way to shop for a mattress involves visiting a showroom and laying on different mattresses until you find one that feels good. Shopping for a mattress online is a little different. Since you can’t lie on all the online mattresses before you buy, reading hands-on product reviews (like ours) is the next best thing.
While manufacturers and sales associates may tell you what you want to hear, our testers share their honest opinions. We’ve ordered dozens of mattresses, tried them out, and rated qualities like firmness, pressure relief, and motion isolation to make the online mattress-buying process more transparent.
Your sleeping position, weight, and aches and pains determine whether you need a soft, medium, or firm mattress, but personal preference matters, too. We recommend starting with these reviews to narrow down your choices:
- Best Mattress Overall
- Best Mattress for Side Sleepers
- Best Mattress for Back Sleepers
- Best Mattress for Heavy People

Brands offering Saatva mattresses, Helix mattresses, and WinkBeds mattresses consistently rank high on our lists for all types of sleepers. They’re good mattresses for couples with different preferences or for anyone looking for a long-lasting, quality mattress.

Bottom line
Our Reviews Team considers the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame the best adjustable bed overall, especially if you’re looking for lots of features to make the most of your investment. We like a few other models, too:
- The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus is a more affordable option that comes with free professional setup, which is hard to find.
- If you’re also in the market for a hybrid mattress, DreamCloud has some of the best bundle deals.
- If you’re looking for a mix of preset and customizable positions, the Helix Adjustable Base combines a preset zero gravity setting with three customizable positioning options.
- The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base is the most affordable option on this list and sticks to the basics.
Getting quality sleep is important to maintain your health, so if you’re experiencing sleep disturbances, don’t wait to talk to your doctor. Ask if an adjustable bed is appropriate for your treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions
Not all adjustable beds have attachment points for a headboard, so you may need to choose a wall-mounted headboard or a freestanding headboard. For more information, read our guide to finding the best headboard for adjustable beds.
Adjustable beds are more expensive than regular bed frames. Despite their high price, many don’t come with a free trial. They’re also heavy, so you may need help bringing the box inside and setting up the frame if you choose a brand that doesn’t offer professional setup. Adjustable beds also require a power supply, so they can’t be used during an outage.
Doctors may recommend adjustable beds for many health concerns. Wu, whom we mention above, told us that adjustable beds can improve sleep quality by allowing people to find a comfortable and supportive sleep position.
Adjustable beds aren’t inherently bad for side sleepers. It’s all about finding an elevation that feels comfortable, so what works for one person may not work for another.
The best sleeping position on an adjustable bed depends on your sleep and health needs. Many people like zero gravity, which elevates both the head and knees to reduce pressure on the spine and open the airways. Elevating the legs can help promote circulation while raising the head can ease congestion.
